I am after the finnish dictionary in digital form

Post by andyfinland » Fri Mar 12, 2004 9:52 pm

Anyone know where one can get hold of a english-finnish dictionary (in digital form) with all the variations of the words, verbs, nouns etc.?

I saw once a typed version in Stockmann's - looked quite old.

I assume you are talking about a dictionary software, and not a dictionary e-book.

Well, http://www.kielikone.fi has a good range of products. Try their site!

I'm really Looking for free dictionaries

Post by andyfinland » Sat Mar 13, 2004 2:00 pm

What I am after is more about Grammar, etc. Like one large text file etc. that I could import into a database. Technical - but I am looking to build a similar project as many of the other. Partly so I can alongside learn the language better - and I like challenges.

Ideally what I need is something like 100,000 words with all the suffixes etc.

Hi,

Finnish-Finnish dictionary (perussanakirja) on CD-rom at Stockmann. It costs about 250 euro, has about 100 000 words and it gives the inflection of nearly all words.

I think the book you mean is
Eugene Holman: Handbook of Finnish Verbs. 231 Finnish verbs
conjugated in all tenses (Finnish Literature Society, 1984)
Modelled on the famous Barrons 201 Verbs series, this
book contains a detailed discussion of all the regularities
and peculiarities of Finnish verb morphology, in
addition to which it has information on the cases used in
conjunction with more than 1200 Finnish verbs. http://www.lysator.liu.se/(ns)/nordic/scn/faq48.html
If so, then it may be worth asking the author for this program:

Eugene Holman: Finnmorf (1986)
An MS-DOS computer program which generates
all the forms of a Finnish verb, noun, adjective, numeral
or pronoun if given the dictionary form. It is thus a computer
emulation of a handbook of Finnish inflectional morphology.
Particularly useful for teachers of Finnish because it
quickly produces neatly formatted full paradigms
which can be saved as text files for further editing. Available
as freeware upon request from <[email protected]>.
[Eugene Holman] http://www.lysator.liu.se/(ns)/nordic/scn/faq48.html.
..if it's still available and working. I think this is the author's home page http://www.eng.helsinki.fi/main/staff/holman_e.shtml

Don't forget Verbix, that does a similar thing online (verb conjugation)
http://www.verbix.com/languages/finnish.shtml and you can download an offline version too.

If it's grammar you're after:
Finnish: An Essential Grammar by Fred Karlsson
http://www.amazon.com/exec/obidos/tg/de ... 6?v=glance
(ISBN: B0000XB9IE) is available to buy as an adobe ebook on amazon and other sites. Great book, I have the paperback. Chock with example sentences and fully glossed (ie. english translations).

If you're looking for a corpus of Finnish text for doing concordancing or some type of research, there is the Finnish Text Bank http://www.csc.fi/tiedotteet/languagebank_050399.html available unfortunately only to academics.

There's also a fair amount of finnish/english wordlists available.
Comprehensive beginner PDF word lists finnish/english
http://www.finnlectura.fi/suomivie/eng-suo2.pdf
freelang.net has a good freeware dictionary too. http://www.freelang.net/dictionary/finnish.html

For just words, try this link http://www.verbix.com/documents/wordfrequency_fi.htm
