monikko tips??
monikko tips??
We've been doing monikko (plural) in my Finnish 3 class. It's not really that hard, but there are a lot of a little rules. Does anyone have any good tips or "cheat sheets" that can help??
If rote memorisation rings your bell, I made a list of 100 words with the basic, kaikki, monta and paljon forms here...
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/Finnish/files/
then select
MonikkoPartitiivi.xls
A good exercise might be to put that list into the different groups based how the words are conjugated... and then share that for the next person or put it in Finnish School... That list is public domain.
Maybe if you look at them in a list, you can start to see patterns, and ... I don't know. It took me a long time and a combination of memorisation and the mathematical approach.

Miksi leivänpaahtimissa on asetus, jolla leivän saa palaneeksi korpuksi, ettei sitä kukaan syö?

Have you noticed that some Finnish words only have the plural form:Phil wrote:We've been doing monikko (plural) in my Finnish 3 class. It's not really that hard, but there are a lot of a little rules. Does anyone have any good tips or "cheat sheets" that can help??
hautajaiset = a funeral, ( the ) funerals
nämä hautajaiset = this funeral = these funerals
häät = a wedding, weddings
naamiaiset = a masquerade, masquerades
sakset = scissors
Can anybody remember more of these?

But dont forget that the partative rules still apply to these words..kalmisto wrote:[Have you noticed that some Finnish words only have the plural form:

e.g. The negative forces the partative..
pikkuhousut = panties
but it is... Ilman Pikkuhousuja...
