opiskelija suomea New Yorkissa

Post by rendall » Tue Jul 02, 2013 2:43 pm

I'm looking for a Finnish speaker to speak Finnish with me in person, here in New York City. We can work out compensation, or exchange if you have something you need.

Or / also, New York Finnish language weekly meetup? Anyone here in NYC interested?

See this ! : http://finnish.meetup.com/members/us/ny/new_york/

As you can see it is a waiting list. The group is not active yet. To activate it would cost some money. If you do not want to activate the group you could send private messages to people on the list and invite them to a meetup of your own. That would not cost you anything. If I remember correctly it is possible to send 14 private messages per day to Meetup.com members. First you will have to register ( it´s free of charge ).

Finland Center in New York might be able to find you a Finnish teacher:

Thank you! That will be very helpful, if they let me in: it did not say Americans with Finnish ancestry :) But my Finnish cousins are visiting next month, so maybe I can get some Finnish cred. Kidding aside, thank you.

There are two formal Finnish courses available in NYC, one through Columbia University, which is very expensive; and one through the tiny Finnish Church, which I was taking when I went to Finland! I wrote to the teacher to resume studies when I returned, but got no reply, so I'm taking charge of learning it anyway.

I had never seen that languagetrainers site before, so I will check them out, but I suspect that they're just a person that will do what I'm doing: ask around for native speakers in whatever location, and then take a cut of the money. They have precisely identical pages for
* Bulgarian in Boston: http://www.languagetrainers.com/bulgari ... boston.php
* Swahili in Sandy Springs: http://www.languagetrainers.com/swahili ... prings.php
* Estonian in Eden Prairie: http://www.languagetrainers.com/estonia ... rairie.php
* Catalan in Cupertino: http://www.languagetrainers.com/catalan ... hristi.php
I wonder what they will they do when they find not a single Estonian in Eden Prairie, nor Swahili speaker in Sandy Springs. Return the money?

That does seem fun. I'm happy to say that's the exact day that my cousins are arriving from Finland for a visit! I'll see if they're up for it. Kiitos head's-upista :)

I had some contact with Finland Center in New York some years ago. They keep posting me invites to their events although they know that I am not located in New York. I have not asked them to stop. It does not disturb me.
