Plural partative question...

Post by Phil » Sun Dec 12, 2004 8:45 pm

With plural partative, is partative ending always the same for the singular and plural of the same word? For instance, if I'm gonna put a -a/-ä at the end of a word in its singular partative form...will I always use that same -a/-ä in plural partative?

Now for -e ending words, will it always be -ta/tä in partative plural?

I already know about the -i/-j changes to signify it's plural, I'm not asking about that.

thnx!

I took a look around and all of the twenty or so objects I "tested" seemed to comply, i.e. it's the same vowel (a or ä) in both singular and plural (kukkaa - kukkia, seinää - seiniä, paperia - papereita...). I can't think of any exceptions right now.

About the words ending in "e" - most seem to have -ta or -tä (sähke - sähkeitä, laite - laitteita, tuote - tuotteita, lahje - lahkeita, katse - katseita) but there are exceptions: pelle - pellejä comes to mind.

Close, but not quite. How about peruna (Perunaa?Perunoita) ikkuna (ikkunoita)? Not to worry though, it's a very easy tense in general.
