tahansa ?

Post by Jiri » Mon Nov 25, 2013 1:58 pm

Hi,
What does tahansa (tähänsä) mean in Finnish?

(I'm not sure about the right spelling)

For example: "Aika voi päättyä milloin tahansa."

tahansa ?

Where you got that "tähänsä" that isnt a word. A isnt Ä and O isnt Ö. Two totally different letters. Dont mix them.
Tahansa is as said "Used with interrogative pronouns (kuka, mikä, missä, milloin, millainen, kumpi etc.) to indicate that a choice between available options (which may be infinite) is indifferent or arbitrary in at least one respect; the English equivalents include any, -ever and either.'2

Thank you for the explanation -- kiitos selityksestä.

The "a - ä" and "ä - e" sounds are still hard for me to recognize: like "saa - sää" or "sä - se" :-(

Minun pitaa oppia kuuntelemaan paremmin.

Yeah...those sounds can be tough for an English speaker....and Finns consider ä and ö as two totally different letters. For English speakers who are used to many different sounds for "a's" and "o's"....because of all the word-borrowing with varying degrees of integration into the language and also all the different regional and country registers and accents, etc.....it can be hard to remember to think of these as different letters.

The way I try to remember is by exaggerating the sounds a little by kind of drawing the lips back in what feels like overkill, to pronounce "ä" and pursing the lips quite strongly to pronounce "ö", but it certainly doesn't come naturally... :)

Afterthought: ...Other languages can go to much greater lengths than Finnish in orthographically representing sounds....Icelandic has a lot of extra things in its alphabet including the retention of an old runic letter...."þ"..called "thorn" ...which has a pronunciation like the "th" in the English word, "thing".... They also have a variation of "d" for that other sound variation of "th", found in the English word, "this"... that Icelandic letter is "ð"...called "eth"...

I've sometimes thought it would have been nice if English...long ago...had adopted something like that to capture the sounds some of the letter combinations are supposed to represent...

For instance, I've heard it as mikä tahansa, mitä tahansa. Depending from what is before it basically means 'ever', in terms of time, position etc. In your case it means whenever, that is milloin tahansa.
