Oyj - Julkinen osakeyhtiö - public limited company (i.e. listed)

AB is swedish for Oy and Abp is Swedish for Oyj

So if a company has both AB and OY... what does that mean? Swedish speaking friendly?

A lot of companies (especially older ones?) have AB and OY, just being complete I think. Any limited company is a AB and an OY, I think by law Oy or AB has to be in the official company name, maybe in the old system you had to have both.

Nowadays I think it is more common to have several names, like Nordea Pankki Oy, Nordea Bank Ltd etc etc.

It means (or used to meant) that the company is bilingual.

Ab Company Oy when swedish is their main language and vice versa if it's finnish.

Nokia's primary name is Nokia Oyj. It's parallel trading names are Nokia Abp and Nokia Corporation. The National Board of Patents and Registration site has further information regarding parallel names.

Nokia also registers it local offices as for instance..
Nokia Ltd in UK
Nokia Inc in the USA.

It is also recorded that the first registered name for Nokia was Nokia AB

Extract for the History of Nokia..

"The Nokia Corporation was formed in 1967 by the merger of three Finnish companies of very different backgrounds. Fredrik Idestam founded Nokia Ab, the first of these three companies, in 1865.The company was a manufacturer of paper located in a paper mill and pulp plant on the banks of the Tammerkoski River."
