Finnish movies with Finnish subtitles?

Post by lumenF » Sat Jul 18, 2015 3:03 am

Hei kaikki, anyone know of some movies in Finnish with Finnish subtitles available? TV shows work too if available. I found learning this way really helpful for learning Japanese but there's a lot less media for Finnish. Only thing I've seen so far was Supisuomea, which is strictly educational.

Edit: found a handful at http://project-modelino.com/movies.php? ... d2235cefe9

Today in S Market I encountered a film called Sotapoika (literally "War Boy"). It's about a kid in World War II, it's a Finnish film. I found it online, try looking for it.

every film dvd should have subtitles for the hearing impaired. so, in finnish if it's a finnish dvd.

And I think you can switch on subtitles as well, when you watch yle areena.
Only YLE has selectable subtitles, afaik. With HD channels there is proper selection available: "Hard of Hearing", which was missing from the original DVB standard.
Yle lists programs that have Finnish subtitles: http://yle.fi/ohjelmaopas/tekstitys/

Visa is for visiting, Residence Permit for residing.

Anni03 wrote:No, I am not Dutch  I have no idea, why [when watching YLE channels] you have to select dutch to get Finnish subtitles.
The YLE channels have two types of Finnish subtitling:
  1. Regular Finnish subtitling for translating foreign shows for the Finnish viewers. These are visible when you choose "Finnish" as the subtitling language. (With this setting, there will be no subtitling in Finnish language shows, only in foreign content.)
  2. Special Finnish subtitling for those who have problems with their hearing. These subtitles are visible when you choose "Dutch" as the subtitling language. With this setting enabled, subtitling will appear in Finnish even though the show is already spoken in Finnish. Color coding may be used to make the different speakers discernible from each other. This type of subtitling will sometimes also include textual cues such as "[PUHELIN SOI]", which are not used in regular (translation) subtitling.

Why "Dutch"? Because YLE did some testing with the early digital converter boxes and digital TVs and - much to their dismay - found out they could not handle two subtitling streams marked "Finnish".

The DVB broadcast standard actually allows marking the other Finnish stream as a special subtitling stream for the hard of hearing - to make it distinct from the regular Finnish subtitling in the menus - but the devices in the market at that time simply did not support that feature, and behaved erratically.

So, YLE chose to tag their HoH subtitling with an arbitrary foreign language code to make it work with the existing devices, and in order not to alienate and anger the viewers... many of whom had just been forced to (reluctantly) buy their first digital TV set or converter box.

(This was during the transition period from the old analog broadcasts to the current digital ones. Many viewers were less than enthusiastic about having to buy a set-top box to continue watching TV. To tell them they would have to buy such a device again to get the subtitles working because they have just been sold a dud by cheap Korean companies doing insufficient testing probably would have lead to riots in the streets, or something.)
