Get married to American, would they get Finnish citizenship?

Post by oxford » Sat Aug 26, 2006 1:27 pm

I have Finnish citizenship and live in the UK. If I were to marry an American would they more or less automatically be able to get Finnish citizenship and thereby live in England as well? I'm also a citizen of the US.

I think the small print at http://www.uvi.fi says one needs to live in Finland for xnum years, speak Finnish etc. to get a citizenship on application.

Well, as long as you are a proper permanent resident in the UK, it works the same way as to getting married to a Finn in Finland more or less.

As hank has pointed out, he can live in the UK with you if you are married - the same as being married to a Finn in Finland. However to get Finnish citizenship you must live together in Finland for 4 years and pass a Finnish/swedish test.
But what shall it profit a people if they satisfy all material desires, but leave for their children nothing, only a wasteland.

Swedish is a child's play after Finnish...
