I hope and pray that no one else would ever need it, but 16 years ago,
I wouldn't have thought I'd be needing the info either.

To anyone considering on reaching out to the places I listed above,
do it sooner than later, for your sake and/or your kids'.

Good, it is now a sticky. When I saw it I thought that I will write and suggest it to be made a sticky, but then I just didn´t. But good.

Nobody can know what lurks behind the next corner. Two weeks ago I took old toys and children´s books to Espoo´s safehouse and couldn´t help noticing that at leat half of the women there were not of Finnish origin. So if somebody who understands English, and is in need of help, she finds the contact info also from here.

Yes considering all the problems people find themselves in, I've always wondered why there hasn't been a 'sticky'.

If people do have the worst happen to them, I'd like to point out that I dealt with 4 different social sevices departments in english with no problems what so ever, they were all sympathetic and not once did I feel they were taking one side or another.

There is one important point, if you do not get married and are having a child then sign a 'joint custody' agrreement.

Thanks, Enk for the information.

To anyone in Espoo who might need to leave home for whatever reason, I want to reccommend Espoon Turvakoti. I'm staying there now. I was thinking of leaving for a long time, but had trouble getting up the nerve to do it. This was partly because I was a little afraid about what it would be like in the shelter, how long I could stay, etc.

You'll get your own room with your kid/kids, there are 3 meals a day and sauna on Tues & Sat. You can pretty much come and go as you please, but you can't leave your kids there without a parent. The staff help you to get all the help and services you need, and are also there to talk to. Many of them speak English. There are even pajamas, soap, shampoo, toothbrushes and toothpaste, etc.

There is no limit to how long you can stay, it's usually until you get your own apartment.

If you are in a bad situation and living in Espoo, don't hesitate to come! You may want to call to see if there is room, that's all. There usually is room though.

If you don't live in Espoo but need to come here it's 26e per day for adults, 13 for kids. If you are an Espoo resident then you fill in an application and have your stay covered by the city.

The address is Jänismetsäntie 2, it's in Lippajärvi. If anyone wants to know more, send me a PM.
Don't worry, it only feels kinky the first time....

I wouldn't say it's normal at all in Finland. I prefer to think of
it that I found a bad apple in the bunch. Many people have commented
though that their spouses have radically changed when they've come
back to Finland, no matter how long they had lived abroad. This was
true in my case, too, although the change wasn't so radical, although
looking back, my ex nowadays compared to when we lived in the
States is completely different, the change just was apparently more
gradual.
