I'm quite proud to have never touched KELA money until I became a student. I moved here in late 1998 and busted my rear end to get a job. Took me about 3 months, but I finally got a permanent job. I never once considered trying to get unemployment money because my ex-wife was working and we were getting by. Now I receive student benefits for my studies. I take these out of principal. Since I am responsible for the same amount of work the Finnish students are and I must too pay the rent, I feel it is only right to be afforded the small stipend so I will not have to work as much. Always a touchy subject to be young, capable, and be looking for unemployemt benefits. ESPECIALLY as a foreigner in Finland.
