Fireworks in Finland!!

Post by hychamaz » Wed Dec 26, 2007 2:20 pm

Merry Christmas everyone. I have a few questions regarding fireworks here. I was shocked when all of the flyers started coming in the mail advertising Fireworks. How on earth are they legal here?? (even in the US they are legal in only a few states and it is highly illegal to bring them out of those states, even though many take a day long drive to do so). Especially with the social medical system here. July 4th in the US is by far the busiest day in any US Hospital ER. I would think accidents are costing the country sooo much in medical costs here in Finland. (no need for the Americans are stupid jokes as my wife already did  )
With that being said does anyone have any reccomendations for the best bang for the buck (no pun intended :D ) Best colorful display rocket? Best little noise making rockets? Also what is the loudest aerial or ground explosive that you can buy here? Thanks everyone, seeing legal fireworks has definately brought out the little kid in me. Hyvää Joulua !

Well, if you don't get a bang for the buck - everybody else shooting out will compensate...

They come up with new names every year... the classic whistling one is a noitapilli and then a small rocket is a kissanpieru... the booming one is a tykäri or tykinjysy... the "chinese new year" small ones are papatti and the bigger ones are kiinari - though they've banned the sales of some of these... then theres your roman candles and rockets but they just vary by the size...

Yeah, for people in the city its going to resemble a war zone from the day before. So tranquilize the dog. And if you neighbours kids don't like you, be ready to get a new mailbox

Thanks Hank for clearing up the names for me. I was wondering if anyone had specific reccomendations for this year. The guys down at Prisma said that 250mg of explosive was the limit in Finland to be in a firework. They had no idea though of which firework had what in it and told me to look at the manufacturers websites (I can imagine myself trying to read the Chinese now  ). So does anyone reccomend something that they bought today or are planning to buy. Thanks everyone.
I read that these types are available in Belgium and Germany but dont know about here ?? This is quite amusing but always SAFETY FIRST!!

As the law here states that you can only shoot fireworks between 18.00 on the 31st and 06.00 on the 1st, you are unlikely to get many recommendations on todays' purchases until it is too late.

Dunno, I'd just go to LIDL and buy a few "thunder kings" and a packet of rockets... and a few roman candle packets... they change the names every other year anyhow.

Thank you Hank and Karhunkoski. I will head back to LIDL tommorow and take your advice. I had no idea of the 12 hour time frame. The way people were walking out of LIDL and Prisma today with shopping carts full of the stuff is going to make for some night (saved an extra valium for the dog and will say a prayer for the mailbox) ). Thanks again.

Hank and Karhunkoski, thank you for your advice. We went to Lidl spent about 12 Euros and had a blast! Those Thunder Kings were exactly what I was looking for (now I know even better for next year). I couldnt believe the show that Jarvenpää (boomtown as you call it Hank  ) put on as well. Great time for the wife and me. Thanks again guys.

They're legal in The Netherlands also..
Although we couldn't see any of the fireworks this time, because of some very heavy smog..
