Teach Yourself FINNISH book/CD's review

Post by Paul » Wed Dec 10, 2003 4:27 am

After reading the post on ". recommended Finnish books", I ordered "Teach Yourself FINNISH" from http://WWW.Amazon.co.uk. That was on Oct 15. It arrived today, Dec 5. Of the 2 CD's, one had a scratch and while listening and following in the book every 30 sec or so the voice would become garbled. I would strongly suggest if people are to purchase this book and CDs do so from a local bookstore and not from http://www.amazon.co.uk. It might save you some frustration.

With as long as this has taken so far hopefully by summertime all will be sorted out and I can add my .02 on a review. ;-)

This is early but since I don't come here that often I will now send Holiday greetings and wish you all a HAUSKAA JOULUA ja UUSI VUOSI

Hi Paul,

Amazon.co.uk had to ship that product 8000 miles from Britain to LA. Have you heard of Amazon.com (the main US branch?) I suggest you order from there in future as in 'normal cases' delivery would take about 3 days if it is posted from the same country.
. is a member of Amazon Associates and makes a small referral fee for items that are bought via traffic from this site and we hope people will still continue to support Amazon as they will be indirectly supporting .. It is unfortunate that you ordered from Amazon UK when you could have ordered from Amazon US - especially with the dollar being so weak! We use Amazon UK as it is convienient for those of us who are living in Finland. We are sorry your experience has been bad but hope you can appreciate there is little we can do when there are 3rd parties involved. Why don't you call Amazon in the US and explain what has happened? I am sure they would be more than willing to send a replacement to you.

Regards,
Neil

I've literrally spend thousands of dollars at amazon.com or amazon.co.uk and have NEVER once had any sort of problem whatsoever.

I'll often stuff from amazon.com and have them ship it 8000 miles to me here in Finland because it's often cheaper than amazon.co.uk (although takes an extra 2 weeks for delivery)

Sorry to hear your CD was crap, Paul. But God Bless Amazon!! ...I couldn't live without them.

Neil and Phil,
Thanks for your comments.

I wasn't aware that . was receiving a referral fee from Amazon. Now that I am aware that Amazon is indirectly helping . then I will back off on my comments to purchase from local book stores. I will still order thru Amazon knowing my purchase will be helping this site stay up and running.

<<We are sorry your experience has been bad but hope you can appreciate there is little we can do when there are 3rd parties involved. >>

Neil, please know that at no time was I trying to cast a shadow on . because of the problems I'm having. I realize that you were letting people know about two books that you felt worthy of mention for those learning the Finnish language.

I'm in the same boat as Phil where I have ordered more books from Amazon then my bank account cares to admit to. And I have never had a problem. I too consider Amazon a treasure trove as I look over at my book case at books varying from Tomb Sculpture, Swords, Ice Sculpture, Insects to Bernini sculpture and the Finnish language. But as with anything, if I get irritated, which I am justified in being right now, then I will let others know.

Yeah, only our referral is to amazon.co.uk which is in England and not amazon.com which is in the USA. This is because most of our members are in Finland/or in Europe so ordering from the UK is "within the EU" to us. Ordering from the USA you have to worry about customs and such stuff, Amazon UK delivers to home.

Therefore, in the USA, you just need to copy the book's name and then go to the USA amazon site. The same book will be there probably (sometimes not, but the USA one has a wider selection).

So basically "do not fish farther than the sea"
Cheers, Hank W.

::taking a deep breath and crossing my fingers hoping this post makes it::

Hank states, "don't fish further then the sea."

Hank, I'm reeling my line in for a couple thousand miles. Oh great master of sage advice do you also think I should change my bait from, "I paid the money and now I want the product" to "Man has one thing in mind, Fate has another?" ;-)

Hank, when I receive a book I got for you I will stick everything in the mail.

I hope everyone in this group has a wonderful Christmas and a Happy New Year
