Finnish nudity

Post by Jukka Aho » Mon Jun 09, 2008 8:02 pm

Some cultures have a rather troubled and uneasy, prudish relationship with anything that concerns nudity – and, above all, nudity in mainstream media. (“Would someone please think of the children?”) Not so in Finland!

This string of articles – each of them originally published in the monthly supplement of Helsingin Sanomat; Kuukausiliite – consists of small self-examining columns written by (or ghost-written for, based on an interview?) various Finnish public figures – including well-known politicians, artists, athletes, and tv/radio personalities. Each article is in first person format and also features a nude photograph of the author (or interviewee, as might be the case.)

The series is titled Sielu ja ruumis, which translates as “Soul and body”.

I never found the companion that was so companionable as solitude.

Didn´t even Father Mitro pose there? (a well-know priest of the Orthodox church)

Two foreigners went to the sauna for the first time. Not knowing what to do they keep their swimsuits on.
Off course all the Fins came in naked.
The foreigners, realizing their mistake, took of their swimsuits before jumping in the pool.
Wrong again.

Sorry...too tempting:

....and this:

Marmite is widespread and available in most food stores in the UK, Ireland, Australia, New Zealand, Canada, India, Sri Lanka and South Africa, and generally most parts of the Commonwealth of Nations.

...well, I can say that there definitely is no shortage in Canada...don't know who is eating it, though... :) My preference is actually for its Australian cousin:

...no shortage of it either...direct from Australia...

"Marmite is made from yeast extract, a by-product of beer brewing."

YUK!

What's so special about this Marmite? Why do you guys like it? I've never tried it, but it sounds really gross!

I don't understand peanut butter either. It's too salty and it sticks to your palate.

There's nothing special about it, it just goes well on toast, for example. It's especially good on rye bread.

And salmiakki isn't salty? Yes, it does stick to your mouth, so it's best enjoyed with a glass of milk or a cup of tea.

Actually I came back from the store just a while ago and right now I'm enjoying my Pantteris and SuperSalmiakkis. But I know you have to be careful with salmiakki, it's so salty that it might raise blood pressure it you eat too much.

I guess it depends on what you're used to. A lot of people from other countries don't like salmiakki, simply because they are not used to it. The same with me and peanut butter, I didn't grow up with it so I find the taste and texture somewhat strange.

I was surprised to find that I actually like Marmite (on toast) even though I haven't been brought up on it, but the taste IS strange, if only in the sense that it's quite unlike anything else Finns would 'traditionally' put on their toast :) I suppose among Finns it would be classified as an 'acquired taste' - a bit like the Norwegian geitost (not that the taste itself is similar, but many of my Finnish friends abhor that sort of cheese whilst I could shovel it in by the spadeful)

I do know of a Finn removed from a Glasgow sauna (no, not that kind of Glasgow sauna ;)) for going in there naked...

Parents visited last week. I now have two packs of Marmite in those handy squeezy bottles and a few jars of SunPat crunchy peanut butter. Happy, happy :D
