Yank needs residence permit-what's the quickest way?

Postby darkat » Thu Jul 24, 2008 2:54 am

Hi Everyone, I am trying to gather information on getting a residence permit in Finland.
I'm an American and my girlfriend is Finnish living in Finland now.
I understand that there are a lot of papers involved and I just want to know the quickest easiest way to do this and we're willing to do what it takes including marriage. Is it better to marry in The U.S. Or Finland? I should mention that i'm a spinal cord injury in a wheelchair . Does anyone think that will make a difference? Like will the authorities think i'm just wanting Finlands medical service? I get good medical here in the states so thats not it .
We would really appreciate any advice.
Thanks.

Marry.
You arent really "wanted" foreigner so marriage is "best way" to come in here.
And yes, you will be yelling for help and social securities. I as taxpayer say stay home. Do not lie to me on that.
Im willing to pay Finnish people to live if they have disabilities, i could get injury and need that some day. Im not willing to pay someone who just wants to come here
Stay a home, youre not wanted nor needed, we have enough problems with our own cripples. Thats of course if you dont have something we dont have.
Sorry for negative post but it is truth.

Most of the things you need to know are explained in the stickies.
And your girlfriend should be able to get the missing (related to your situation) information.
Why do you ask us?

Just remember that marriage is not automatic RP.

You need to prove, notice that it is you who needs to prove, that you have been living with her for 2 years.

They, migri that is, can and will refuse residence permit based on marriage if they think it is only for sake of getting RP.

Onkko your the biggest emotional cripple I know....Finland and this forum could do very much without you.

Darkat your very welcome. You have to excuse Onnko a typical example of an uneducated Finn who hasn't got a passport.

Kind regards,

Wow, what a tool. Onkko how do you know if this man is not capable of working? Just because he has a disability and needs to get around in a wheel chair does NOT mean he can't work. He could be a frickin quantum physicist for all you know. Sheeesh dude.

Darkat - as a yank myself, the process is actually very carefully explained on the immigration department's website (in english).

The forms can be found here: http://www.migri.fi/netcomm/content.asp?article=1991
The fact sheets and answers to most of your questions can be found here: http://www.migri.fi/netcomm/content.asp ... anguage=EN

I would recommend you read the documentation through thoroughly first and then make the decision that is best for you. I can say, however, the "easiest" way to obtain residency status here is to indeed have a Finnish spouse. That alone doesn't get you through the process, but it is a deciding factor.

basically - you have to remember just that the buraucrats here (as anywhere) want to have their papers ticked in the right boxes and life is much easier than if you try to be creative and think on you own - you have to think like an evil customs officer.

OK, so travellingwise you need to check the spousal visa systems in both countries - would you benefit more if the marriage was performed in the country that suspects foreign marriages more, but there isn't really a differnce. Getting a licence here requires a visit to te US embassy to swear you're never beeen married.

also looking from the US point tof view, how "easy" is it to get the "spouse visa" to the USA? finland has by fat less sponsorship paperwork involved but then again theres not much belief in bs. regardless in either country you marry - get the papers well beforehand and remember to register yorselves in the appropriate offices and have all the papers imaginable starting from birth certificates apostilled (your finnish spouse by all probability will give you a blank start when asked for a birth certificate)

so then when you are both married nd decide to settle in either country - finland is sceptical of "true love" but then again makes people mad ad moving from the usa to finland has been a sure sign - helps if you have a profession. and then just in case you can't predict the futue you apply for the greencard just incase... the embassy here is appointment only, but gaudreaus links are comprhensive

to your original question - theres no fast way, if you just come here and expect to stay then some onkko will cart you on the siberian train

So onkko, what about the tourists? You don't have to pay for them and on the contrary they spend a lot of money, which eventually goes into your pocket. Do you have any special "service" for the tourists? Maybe you should mention your address here, and then tick-wallet, healthy yanks would like to visit you there

He didnt say what he can do, he just said that he is on wheelchair. I judge on what i know. Working in finland isnt easy and if you are on wheelchair add some difficulties. Yes he can be genious but probability says hes moron who wants social services and will be yelling for them when possible. Be realistic.

I would like to but i cant because im not "civilized" "understand cultures" "other !"#¤%", i say how things are. If it looks like a !"#¤%, smells like a !"#¤% and tastes like a !"#¤% its !"#¤%, thats something what "diplomats" cant say.
