FINALLY.........

Post by kwallette » Thu Jan 22, 2004 8:48 pm

Just have to say I received my residency documents today! I was surprised it went so quickly. I just sent in the marriage certificate on January 6 and received my papers and passport back today!! Thanks for all of the help and answers people have provided me!

I was just doing it, you stupid woman. I just put it down to come here to be reminded by you to do what I'm already doing! I mean what's the point of reminding me to do what I'm already doing...

FINALLY.........

Wow, that's pretty fast! :) Damn, I wonder what in the hell the deal is with my renewal as, well, it has been almost 5 months and in spite of monthly phone calls to check on the status....

Maybe it's because you live in Helsinki and kwallette doesn't. :?

Hmm...let's see...my permit expired in November which means I can't really leave the EU without wondering if the receipt which is good for only 5 months really will work when re-entering Finland. So....where is the logic of speeding up the new applications from outside Finland down to 2 weeks while I've got my arse swinging in the breeze over here wondering if I'll be escorted out of the country before they decide to send me the permit? I'll likely take a completed form for my permanent permit with me when I go to get the new one so that I'll hopefully get it only a month or two after the new one expires since the new one will be dated from sometime in early Nov.

I wonder if the INS is this slow.

Just went to the police station today to set about renewing my wife's permit today. The woman taking the application told us while asking not to be quoted on this: "The official waiting time is 3 months, but to her it seems as if people have to wait closer to 6 months." (basic translation)

So yeah, in Helsinki it takes a long time.

Kari..congrats! I am looking forward to having a cup of kahvi with you when you arrive (as we discussed).

A few words of advice:
a.)Bring letters from your previous employers stating you were employed there- dates, title etc. (you will most definitely need these..documentation is BIG here)

b.) Bring copies of your school transcripts/diplomas ( even High School and/or University)..Have them sent to you BEFORE you go looking for a job or to the unemployment office..

c.) If you are going to transfer money to a bank account here (SWIFT), go to your bank in the states THIS weekend before you hop on that plane and fill out the paperwork (Oi what a pain if you haven't)

Once here:
1.) Go to the registration office and get your magic number (you have to have that before you can do pretty much anything but sit on yer bum and drink kahvi all day  )..i believe you have 7 days to register.. I did it right away and got my number within a week.

2.) Get a Travel Card ( you can fill out the paper work at the registration office).

3.) Make sure the Posti knows where you are (this should happen with registering at the registration office..)..

4.) Open a bank account..(have to have that magic number previously stated)...

Oh..and lest I forget..you will have to keep your passport with you for most of the above..because they have to verify your permit..

Okay...If I forgot anything I am sure someone will post it right after me :)
