Third infinitive?

Post by garoowood » Wed Mar 25, 2009 12:50 pm

Kadonneesta jotakin tietäviä pyydetään ottamaan yhteyttä poliisiin.
Must I use ottamaan here or can I also put ottaa?

"Ottaa" in this context would be the "helsinkian" way of talking. :) It's colloquial Finnish, not book Finnish. It also sounds a bit.. weird. At least in my opinion.

It's the same as when you ask someone if they know how to play chess. "Osaatko pelata shakkia?" would be the correct way while "Osaaks pelaa shakkii?" would be the slang version.

This way of speaking sounds actually really, really weird and annoying to me. :x I've never understood how this kind of speaking has managed to become so common.

Modern-day Helsinki/Espoo/Vantaa (youth?) slang. I haven’t really heard it elsewhere but perhaps it spills to nearby places like Kerava, too? At least to some extent?

Also common in Lahti, not only limited to the capital region
