Irish Naval Ship open to public this weekend.

Post by aguinness » Thu May 28, 2009 11:59 am

Quote from the E mail I got.

1. LE stands for "Irish ship". Niamh is a figure from Irish mythology - a beautiful woman who rode a white horse. The ship is an offshore patrol vessel. It is a high performance vessel with Finnish engines (Wartsila). The Commanding Officer is Lt. Cdr. Kenneth Minehane.

2. LE Niamh arrives in Helsinki at Jatkasaari Quay at 11:00 on Saturday 30th May. She departs for Turku (Forum Marinum) on 2nd June and leaves Finland on 4th June.

3. While in Helsinki, LE Niamh is open to the public from 13:00 to 15:00 on each of the days 30th May, 31st May, 1st June. Admission is free.

4. The visit is in part an Irish contribution to the celebration of the 200th anniversary of the Diet of Porvoo. At 14:30 on Sunday 31st, Minister Mary Harney, Ambassador McDonagh, and the Commanding Officer of LE Niamh, Lt. Cdr. Kenneth Minehane, will be in Porvoo, Jokikatu 57 to inaugurate the new Embassy plaque in honour of Johan Anders Jagerhorn, who was involved in the 1798 rebellion (friend of Lord Edward Fitzgerald: imprisoned in the Tower of London) before his contributions to the Diet of Porvoo.

5. The visit also symbolises the close relationship of Ireland and Finland in the European Union and in particular in the sphere of peacekeeping and conflict resolution [collocation of Irish and Finnish troops in Chad, Kosovo, etc/ role of Prime Minister Harri Holkeri, President Martti Ahtisaari, and others in the Northern Ireland peace process]

6. Following her visit to Helsinki, LE Niamh will move on to Turku to the new Finnish Naval Command. In Turku she can be visited on 3rd June, at the Forum Marinum, from 14:30 to 16:00.

7. This is the first naval visit in Finland in 2009.

Please feel free to pass this invitation to visit LE Niamh on to friends and family.

If you require any further information please do not hesitate to contact me at the Embassy.

Yup, and the Finns could never understand why when the Irish packed up and left, generously leaving their surplussupplies, that 2 out of 3 meals were "chicken and chips".
Political correctness is the belief that it's possible to pick up a turd by the clean end.
