A collection of Finnish pop/rock hits

A friend of mine wanted some recommendations of Finnish contemporary pop/rock artists so I created a playlist for him on Spotify. Just thought I might as well share the list here because songs are a nice, fun way to practice language... regardless of whether you actually sing along or just listen to the pronunciation and study the lyrics.

(You can usually quite easily find transcriptions of the lyrics on the Internet, even for Finnish songs. Just type the name of the song and the word “lyrics” in the Google search box. And videos for many of the songs on the list can be found on YouTube.)

The latter part of the list also contains some songs sung in English – but by Finnish bands, nonetheless.

I guess so. It’s not only a playlist, though. Spotify – even the ad-sponsored free version – allows you to listen to the songs on the playlist without paying anything. (That’s kind of the idea behind Spotify – free listening and shared playlists. And also the possibility to buy the songs, if you will.) But you need to create an account and install the program.

You need an invitation token for creating a free account. Sometimes people get their invitation tokens from other countries via proxies, register as a user, then change their location in their user profile to the country where they actually are. And if you’re in a country where the service hasn’t been officially launched yet it is possible to circumvent geographical restrictions by using proxy servers for actually streaming the music. (There are free proxy servers, there are commercial proxy servers and there are proxy/VPN services run by ordinary individuals for their friends on their home servers; Linux boxes and whatnot. But in any case, the proxy server you use needs to be located in a country where Spotify has already been officially launched.)

Since you asked, here’s a copy of the playlist as it appears at the moment. Having a mere list of artists and titles is probably not too exciting if you can’t actually play those songs straight away, though... the way you can on Spotify. (OK, many of those songs can be easily found on YouTube or P2P networks but it’s not nearly as convenient as just clicking a link and letting the program play it all for you.
