Finnish Customs - Packages from the USA

Post by Aphrodite » Tue Dec 22, 2009 8:43 pm

Hei,

i have there a problem - my mother and me both ordered clothes from the usa. We also have the tracking numbers from USPS. The 2 parcels are delivered with priority international.
Today it said at posti.fi (for both parcels!):

Item registrations
22.12.2009, 10:27 Shipment waits for delivery 96000 ITELLA LOGISTIIKKA KULJETUS
21.12.2009, 16:54 Item in sorting 01010 ITELLAN LOGISTIIKKAKESKUS
21.12.2009, 13:10 Item has arrived to country 01000 HKI VANTAA, ULKOMAANTERMINAALI
10.12.2009, 02:48 Departured to Finland 01000 Ulkomaa/Foreign country
08.12.2009, 02:48 Posted from country of departure 01000 Ulkomaa/Foreign country

-------------------

and at usps.com:

Attempted Delivery Abroad, December 22, 2009, 10:27 am, FINLAND
Out of Foreign Customs, December 21, 2009, 1:20 pm, FINLAND
Into Foreign Customs, December 21, 2009, 1:10 pm, FINLAND
Arrived Abroad, December 21, 2009, 1:10 pm, FINLAND
International Dispatch, December 10, 2009, 2:48 am, ISC LOS ANGELES CA (USPS)
Arrival

----------------------

So we went to the post, and they told us the packages would be at another post office. so we went there and the lady there told us the packages would be both at the finnish customs. Does it now mean i have to go there and have to pay the VAT or does it just mean that they are there - without paying it?
Cause at posti.fi it doesn´t say anything that the parcels at the finnish customs.

I am also confused cause i already ordered before some things in the usa, and they always came straight to my house.
I also would like to get the parcels till tomorrow cause in the packages are our christmas presents...

So any ideas what i could do now? Maybe call there tomorrow and ask if its possible to pick them up?

It depends really on the items and their value. I've picked up boxes before from customs but not paid anything. Generally I get food boxes from home so there's not much taxables in that. Clothes are worth more money so that probably sparked their interest.

You can go and retrieve them, they normally mail you a piece of paper with the address and time. You could go there and ask if you know the boxes are there.

Make sure you bring your receits, customs will ask for them too.

Hope this helps

You will get the slip stamped with "tulliposti" and then "bring receipt with"... they want/need to know *what* it is so as to find the customs number (I've gone through with a moon from the sky) and then the price to scrooge the VAT off you. If you go there stupid screaming "gift" they'll be pissed off and screw you double...

unfortunately not ;)
On the 23nd i called the ITELLA Company about 3 times and they all told me that the packages are not anymore at the customs, that they will send someone from ITELLA who will bring me the packages. After 4 hours waiting i called again and asked what´s going on and finally than somebody told me that the information they gave me before was wrong. The packages are still at the customs and i have to go there and get them. Well at this time we already had 5pm and it was too late to go there. So we had no christmas presents for christmas cause they were all at the customs. :D Well thank god it doesn´t matter for us, we had at all a nice christmas.
But i will pick them up tomorrow, will pack the VAT from 22% and than finally the whole drama is over.
Next time i will declare my packages as a gift - the company where i got my clothes is doing that when you are asking for it. ;)

Gift = sure way to have boxes for a day in customs as they open them and check if there is receipt in there... and guess what if they find one?

The limit of "gift" as is for VAT is 45 euros. Regardless of anything. If it reads "gift" with some paltry sum it'll be stopped more surely than merchandise. Even the postage can get you over the threshold.

I tried to have parcel send as gift, doesn't work. Even if there is no receipt in it they will ask you for one to make sure you don't owe then $$$!

One thing is to address the package to every person in the family; as it is 45 euros per person... and a few other tricks... but its rather "Dear Gran, don't send any junk - I'll pay more for it and have to go to weird places and waste half a day."

When you talk about going to customs, where are they? I am in Mikkeli.
