My Grand father used to sing one does anyone know anything about.
Verse 1. Into China far away, came a little German band one day, started playing funny little tunes on their Trombones and bassoons. Boom Boom.

Naah, thats a German "funny one"...

Its the idea, you "lose a vowel" on each round.

So, without Google, but two whiskies...

Drei Chineser und ein Kontrabaß
Sassen auf den Straße und erzählt Sich was
Da kom die Polizei und fragt Was ist den das?
Drei Chineser und ein Kontrabaß

And then you make i to e

Dree Cheneser und een Kontrabaß...

Very popularisch drinking song... And I think Politisches Inkorrekt

Something wicked this way comes."

After reading these posts I'm hoping someone can help me find the name and singer of this song my Mother used to sing when she was cooking...smiles. Mind you it isn't a lullaby but is very melancholy like so many Finnish songs. I think they used to play it on Finnish radio during the 50's (maybe) my Grandmother sent the lyrics to Mom and then when she died I foolishly gave the written lyrics to my cousin.
At any rate, I could never find out who sang the song. I've even checked U-tube and haven't found it there (yet) It really is a beautiful song and it will definitely get those tears flowing.

The song is about an elderly mother who is watching over her dying son. The room is very dark so her boy asks her to bring a lamp so that he might see better. She brings the lamp, the boy thanks her etc. Eventually he asks her to shut the light because he's about to die.

Here are a few phrases from the top of my head in no particular order because I can't remember it.

"...on äiti vanha ja kunnel sylmiin hän katsoo poikansa kalpea
On poika äidin ja sillä tiellä...
"...tuo Aiti lamppu en nähdä voi... (ja sitten)
...toi äiti lampun...

Öi äiti, äiti... nyt poika loistää, sututta lamppu nyt äiti öi.
Here´s the song you´ve been searching: "Metro-tytöt: Äiti, sytytä lamppu" https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=f45yBZbQDoE

My Finnish mother used to sign us a lullaby and I never saw it written down nor did I ever understand what it meant. It's driving me crazy trying to find it.

This is a bit crazy, but I am going to write it down phonetically to see if anyone can figure it out. Please don't laugh

oi kee leh pee neh pay nem posta
o kee pee leh pay nen posta
yoh mah keh sohrriah keh sohrriah
keh pee leh mee nem pay num posta

Thank you in advance!!

Hi,
I think the song you are looking for is Soittajapaimen (Playing Shepherd):

There's also an English translation:

"Tein minä pillin pajupuusta
Toki vain pajupuusta, hei
Soreasti, koreasti pillini soipi
Toki vain pajupuusta, hei
Soreasti, koreasti pillini soipi
Toki vain pajupuusta"

Oh my gosh, Nean, this is it!! I am so excited and delighted, and above all, amazed you were able to identify my scribbles as being Soittajapaimen !! You are absolutely brilliant. I cannot thank you enough. Am sending this to all my family members who have also been searching all these years since Mother passed away. How I regretted never asking her to write it down and what it meant. You have no idea who much this means to me! There are no words to express my appreciation. :D :D :D
Blessings to you and your family, and to Finland Forum,
Saari Juliet

My grandfather passed away in 1985 but used to sing this to me when I was a child. Usually boincing on his knee:

Guddi guddi ganku
Bucket full of banku
Goose ga da lu la la
Binku "my name here"

Thats how it sounded & could be nonsense but would appreciate any help/insight.

Oh, the knee bounce song...

Körö körö kirkkoon
Pappilan muorin penkkiin
Valkealla varsalla
Ruskealla ruunalla

I remember this and that you'd en up dropping off the horse, but I dont remember lyrics having your name in it, but its a folk song and a million variations

Something wicked this way comes."

Hi,
Looking for another long lost Finnish song that my Finnish grandmother sang to me in Northern Minnesota, which I then sang to my children growing up. My dad once told me it was about a boy on a hill. I have to write it out phonetically (unless I can post an audio clip of me singing it!).

"Hey lahti gum mahti pi pusta nosta
Fa lei a hatterma sauhu

Si alta si koolo
Ilta silta
Temen poika laulu"

Thank you!
Cynthia from Brooklyn

Is that supposed to be read according to Finnish phonetics or English?

I think I can make out some potential words in there:

Heilahti ... mahti piipuista noista
--- sauhu
Sen alta se kuuluu
alta sillan
tämän pojan laulu

I can't find anything based on those lyrics though. :(

I think I found the right song with the help of Valinnan vapaus! :D

"Hei! Henttuni kammarin piipusta nousee
Vaalean harmaa sauhu,
Sieltäpä kuuluu joka ilta
tämän pojan laulu."
