Does anyone have a nice sheet wth all the verb conjugations?

Post by Phil » Tue Oct 21, 2003 9:29 am

Does anyone have a nice sheet of paper with all the verb conjugations in electronic format (like MS Word etc..)? Something that has the verbs split into the 6 different verb types and then all the minä, sinä, hän etc...

I found something similar but with all the Finnish cases. I looked through our links section and couldnt find anything.

Thanks!!

It's all on paper. There are two books for this:

Johanna Heimonen from the Vantaa aikuiskoulutuskeskus wrote a book full of large tables
'conjugation of Finnish verbs and nouns' or whatever the title is.

I think Leila White wrote also a similar book.

Do you mind going to the book shop? There is copy -right on these books, so no electronic form.

Several links have been posted here with simple and elementary conjugation tables. This donnerwetter link is good and Kimberly Maikarinen has also good pages. Somebody else surely remembers their exact url adresses.

Johanna Heimonen,
suomen kielioppia edistyneille, 20 euro ISBN .....

(google it out)

The other one is available at Stockman's book shop:

Suomen verbien rektioita Hannele Jönsson-Korhola & Leila White 58 s. 951-680-118-8
10 euroa 1989 101 MONTA SATAA SUOMEN SANAA Ulkomaalaisille tarkoitettu ...

For those with a larger memory Lauri Hakulinen wrote one for nearly all Finnish words.

To understand these books you have to know a lot about Finnish though, and there is hardly a way to put these tables in a meaningful way into computerized tables.

There is a CD though: simply the whole dictionary:
Suomen perussanakirja CD:lla at Stockman for 200 euro.
There you have the first 100 000 words together with their conjugation
(also protected by copyright). Google for cd-perussanakirja.

That dictionary has all tables in electronic form.

That'd be a long bloody book since most verbs have something like 2,000 forms. Also, the verb types they teach you in the F4F classes don't map to what the finns use so there aren't any dictionaries that will tell you verbityypi 1-6 as there's really 37 of them or so. I guess they don't want to scare you off too early.

http://www.verbix.com/languages/finnish.shtml is nice for conjugating verbs and being shown the true fear :) I also find http://www.henkimaa.nu/finndex/images/grammar/cases.pdf to be exceedingly handy.

That's not really a verb conjugation book though...it's 'rection' which is a listing of verbs and the irregular forms they require when used in sentences. It's a good book, but likely not really useful for the first class since I think they try not to scare you off too early :)

tuul verb conjugator

Try this verb conjugator tuul.exe:
http://www.wakkanet.fi/~pahio/esitteet.html

info here
http://www.wakkanet.fi/~pahio/wind.html

It looks like a DOS program, but it works, and may even be more extensive than verbix... I haven't used it much yet.

PS. I highly recommend MONTA SATAA SUOMEN SANAA too! awesome book!

I have in my hand.
"Hand Book of Finnish Verbs" 231 Finnish Verbs Fully Conjugated in all tenses arranged Alphabetically by Eugene Holman ISBN 951 717 362 8
ISSN 0355 1768.
It not only fully conjugates 231 verbs it also has a glossary of 1100 of the most common verbs clasifed by type.
One handy feature is there is also a reverse alphabetic listing .i.e. you can se which verbs end in the same three letters and therefore probably/possibly conjugate the same way... I find easier to learn verbs in groups likes this..erota, kirota, irrota, siivota etc.
