an indian want a job in finland

Post by vinod » Sun Jul 13, 2003 4:16 pm

Hello everyone, I am 39 year old Electrical Engineer working as Chief Manager in state owned power company in India. I have 16 years expereince in field of Power transmission, SCADA, Microwave and Fibre Optic communications. Detailed infomation on my job expereince is avaialble at web site http://resumes.yahoo.com/vinkumrai/resumemay03

I am graduate in electrical engineering as well as science i.e. i have done two degrees courses. Few years back, in year 2000, I happen to stay in Espoo in Finland for a month on a training assignment at Nokia training centre. The training was imparted by Nokia on behalf of Finnish power company Fortum as a part of their contractual obligation for the work they were doing in India for Indian power company where I work. Thereafter, I found finland and its people so good that i always wish to live in Finland and work there. But I do not know any forum which can help me getting job there. Can somebody help me on this.

some more information about me is avilable at website http://www.geocities.com/vinkumrai/index1.html

Hello vinod,

Do you have any connections here with some Finnish folks in your field? They are probably the best people to ask. Perhaps you could call and ask for some information from the company you would most like to work for. Hopefully someone else here might be able to give some good help, but I am not sure if we have anyone here who is working in your field in Finland.

Good luck!

Well I know a little bit about power stations mainly because my customers when I was at Nokia were often "Power Generation Companies" including two in India. They bought two small private radio networks from Nokia.
It was something like the Indian National Gas and Oil Power company..sorry long time ago. One was I think in Madras the other in the North East in a place famous for tea, growing..so famous I cant remember the name of it  I remember though we had some guys in Finland for training. 1996/7 could be that you were one of them.
Anyway in Finland the oppotunities are either with the local power companies :

You can search for just about any city in Finland to find the home pages.
Or with the one Finnish company that makes small power generation equipment..Used to be called IVO but now it is Fortum.

I wish to inform that I came to know about Finland through Finnish company Fortum (formerly IVO) who were contractor to our company in India for establishing a microwave system for our company in India. I know number of Finnish guys of Fortum who were in India for about five years for above project. I will certainly seek thier help if required. Definitely, I will go about suggestions of members and would send my applications to these companies. I send application to Nokia but no response possibly that i am not a communication or software engineer which they normally recruit.

I would like to know about job situations in Finland. For me it appears that job stability is pretty poor in Finalnd beacuse some of finnish guys who were in India for the project lost their jobs on return.

Thanks to all who responded to my querry and would go for their suggestions. I am grateful to Mr. Peter, bat and Olly for thire valuable suggestions.

I need some concrete help to swim through the situation. To begin with I can go for a small job in any field viz. teaching, construction of power lines and other construction work, project management, tendering etc. or any other office work. can somebody advice me of some easy job to start with. any kind of job would do? any prospective employer may also respond.

The situatation at both Nokia Networks and Fortum(IVO) has not improved regarding job security and prospects.
Both have continued to lay off staff and have down sized by about 10-15% in Finland.I knew about the guys who were on overseas projects and returned to be handed their redundacy notes as thank you presents for completing their project. There was some sort of promise of a job on project completion ..but the jobs offered were just a temp help desk boring dead end tasks:... "sit and wait for that phone to ring until we can legaly make you redundant!"
There are many engineers out of work. I know several who have taken early retirement at 50-55 years old and make a small income from odd jobs such as supermarket trolly collection and shelf filling.

I have to be blunt and to the point with you.
Your proffesion is very specialised and to the best of my knowledge there are no big Power/Grid Network projects planned in Finland. Our Power Station are quite modern and almost automatic so there are not many openings there.
Bottom line is:
I do not think it is a good idea for you to put much hope in finding work in your line in Finland in ther current economic situation.

I'm not exactly sure what you are searching for, but you could give it a go at Ensto. They are in the electrical accessories and installations.
I've been doing some freelance work for them through an advertising agency. I don't know if they have any vacant places, but you can always try.

Dear peter,

Your advice is very enlighting and useful. certainly i am having very good job in a growing power sector in India at fairly good position and its not a opportune moment to be desperate to leave present job and go far a risky preposition. lots of domestic investment is pouring in field of power sector in India.

our requirement of manpower is big as most of our stations are not automatic and manned by people. i have seen in finland that most of stations or unmanned but in india stations are mostly operated by man because of cheap manpower and poor automation level. a single station is manned by approx. 60-70 people in India.

development in the field of power sector in India has been static for long time because govt is the only player in this field. Poor govt. policies has only worsened the situation. Now, with reforms in power sector and opening this sector to private and multinational players, LOT of growth is expected in this field and saturation would be too far.

so i have dropped the idea for time being and would like to waite and watch. Thanx for your timely advice.

Power generation is growing business even in Finland. But am confused how you will be able to cope with the language. The IT Indians are able to work in English so there is no problem. I have been here for some 13 years but have managed to concentrate on International business (lingo = English). 8)

 Maybe a non-line type of work e.g. sourcing of supplies etc globally for the Finns?
