There is no working visa, it is a residence permit based on work.
When you get an other residence permit (based on family ties) you're allowed to work immediately.

ahh.. yes.. i meant residence permit based on work. But still, I can't be sure how long it would take for my residence permit based on family ties to be granted. It can take months for Asians..so i better be prepared with a RP based on work. Thanks for answering Rinso have a nice weekend!!

Why don't you get married in a simple way between both of you... Go to court, police?

Then lodge your permit application based on marriage,

Then while that is pending, make proper wedding as you might want to in Feb?

That is if you are not able to get a permit based on Job after your Dec contract?

@zwagger: wow.. great idea!!thanks!! i just mentioned this to my fiance.. he doesn't seem very fond of it but he will think about it. We both come from very close families.. so, if we do wed before February.. we have to keep it in a secret because that might be offensive for her family and my parents.

Do you think we can call a person from maistraatti twice?? i mean.. if we are already married.. do you think they would want to come again for another wedding??? I would really love to go home to my home country in January to get a traditional wedding gown and have some traditional pre-wedding ceremonies for the bride there.

No they don't.
You can have the official wedding in the town hall (maistraatti) and then later a church ceremony.

yeah.. I guess so too.. the idea is just too good to be true. No, we won't have church wedding as both of us are not into that sort of wedding. by the way.. if we go to maistraatti to get married, do we need to bring anybody?? to be some kind of witnesses for our wedding? is it necessary in Finland? The two required witnesses can be supplied by the staff, if you won't/can't bring your own.

I would just like to add that if they say they will not provide their own witnesses for you (if you haven't got 2) just keep pestering them and they'll eventually agree to it. The whole process only takes a few minutes. A friend of mine didn't have anyone on that particular day to show up and after being denied twice by the woman at the counter that there was no one in the office able to 'spectate' she finally gave in and within 15 minutes there were 2 people on the scene to witness the marriage.

Don't know if you will be in the same situation. Just don't want you to freak out if they tell you the same thing when and if you don't have much time left until the ceremony.

thanks Rinso, my Finnish is not perfect, but I guess it would be okay.. I can handle normal conversation (especially ones without any Savo dialects or accents,hehe)

@Kutittaa:thanks for the warning I actually need to pester my own embassy more to provide me the non-impediment letter. Somehow, the rules to get non-impediment letter in my embassy, requires my birth certificate to be sent to my home country, to be fotocopied and legalized there (in 2 departments and have to be done in my pääkaupunki), and sent back to my embassy in Finland. Anyway, for the witnesses, boyfriend will ''make sure'' his mother comes as a witness in our wedding, or no wedding at all (such family man), and as for my witness I would grab someone on the street (joking!!)

Just saying because my mate thought nothing if it at the time. The woman he spoke to on the phone said there would be no problem with getting 2 people to supervise for him but when the time came and the woman at Maistraatti refused to get 2 people, it was an 'organised chaos' to say the least as he described it.

Just don't be afraid to give them a good nagging if needs be. You may or may not face the same situation at all. It's just a heads up.

@Kutittaa I see.. thanks for the concern, that is very nice of you. I'm a bit discouraged with all paperwork I might need for the marriage and to apply RP based on family ties (the more I hear, the more I worry) .. let's hope everything would go just fine.

I was once fixing some computers in a maistraatti, drinking a coffee and waiting for a reboot and comes a bloke in velvet robes and a chain and asks "here we see a man doing nothing - you could spare 5 minutes?" so I got shanghai'd as a witness by the "registrar of lives"
