Remote working for UK company

Postby bencoder » Wed Dec 21, 2011 3:09 pm

Hi,

I've recently moved to Tampere from England to live with my girlfriend and I'm looking for work. I may have an opportunity to work remotely for a company I worked for back in the UK a while ago.

I've read through the similar topic, Work for US Company, but Live in Finland?, but that situation is for a non-EU company and a non-EU citizen, so I'm wondering if this would be easier for myself and what the best way to go about it is.

I intend to live here permanently so I will have to pay taxes here rather than the UK - would the best way still be to set myself up as a toiminimi and invoice the UK company or is there a simpler way as it's the EU?

And, as an aside, what would I require to use this as the basis for supporting myself in order to obtain the right to reside here?

Thanks for any help,
Ben

As an EU resident you already have the right to reside here. I think you will have to register with the police, obtain a tax number and register for a social security number. Also register with Kela for healthcare. I believe that is all, at least I think that is all I did.

Can't help you with the working for a UK company paying Finnish taxes question though.

Okay, I was under the impression that I had to prove I can support myself in order to register with the police and I can't do that until I have a job - I could be (happily) wrong though.

Thanks for your assistance.

You have right to reside here. But you also have obligation to register yourself during the first three months of your stay. Also the police has the obligation to not register someone who can't support oneself: http://www.poliisi.fi/poliisi/home.nsf/ ... endocument

Also kela will take care of you if you are a permanent resident, not just registered here..: http://www.kela.fi/in/internet/english. ... 01091511EH

You could have a boatload of cash or married to Stephen Elop...

edit. seriously: to work for English company the easiest way would probably be to set up toiminimi and bill them. I'd guess it would be quite hard to get them to pay social security, pension, taxes, etc. here.

Toiminimi or even a limited company (if you have some cash for the 2500e initial capital). That would also enable you to search for work from other sources (eg in Finland) at the same time.

But when signing a contract with a UK company, you need to think about currency changes. Given the volatility of the current economic situation, you need to choose between playing safe and invoicing in euros, or taking a risk with a sterling-based deal which could go either way I guess (I'm not a fortune teller).

If you have been living with your girlfriend in UK for 2 years you can get residence permit no problem, with or without employment. I never even went in the 3 months I went after 5 months and they were like yeah no biggie.
