Residence Permit on Shared Apartment

Postby VictorE » Mon Feb 20, 2012 10:40 pm

Moi,

I am living in helsinki, currently studying my masters degree.I m married and my wife is finnish citizen (native finn). I am applying for residence permit but right now living with my wife in Shared Apartment. So my question is, as there is no income and assets requirement for applicant whose spouse is finnish, can I apply for residence permit while we are living in shared apartment and show our that 'place of living' in application form? or is there need to be separate family apartment or house for couples applying for permit.

Thank You with warm regards :)

Own apartment is not a requirement as such. The only thing they are interested is to know if you are "really" married (and not just on paper). The housing arrangement as it is looks bit like a weak point, but it is the entire situation that is evaluated.

You can go ahead and apply. I barely wrote a thing on either of my permit applications as I have no children, am not an asylum seeker and being married to a Finn means not having to declare anything in regards to income. Apart from filling the form in myself, ticking 10 boxes, writing a short reason for moving (in the first app) and then getting my wife to put her details in as well as signing. There wasn't much else.

If accommodation is sketchy it may throw a red flag. Keyword is 'may'. I also thought that there was some sort of 'bad mieli' thing that comes if you are here as a student/tourist and then try to live here, it's seen as dishonest or whatever.

Him being studying, married to a Finn and also residing together, gives him a stronger edge to apply and also possibly been granted a residence permit A on family ties. I have a friend with similar case and he has also extended his permit for another 4 years now.

@ Kutittaa

Thanks bro for your suggestion. Specially on every aspect of the case. Well then i think i have to go ahead. And this shared accommodation thing is temporary. mean i am already in the queue of getting a proper house. So can i say in the application that this shared accommodation is temporary and mention where i applied for house?

You do not have to state it is temporary accomodation, you both only need to go and change the number of occupants and include your name in the accomodation which i guess is your wife and yourself, and get a paper from Tontti or the rental company that you both leave together in one roof and address, attach the paper to your permit application to the police.

IIRC they don't ask you what kind of accommodation that you have on the form. Unless that is you are filling out another form. If you fill out the one based on family ties then as far as I remember there is just the question of whether you will live with your spouse or not, and if not why not?

The fact you are studying and married as others have said is pretty strong grounds for approval. One cannot cover all the conditions of everything in life, everyone knows this. Just make sure you dot all the lines and don't fill anything out that you don't need to. The person at the police station who takes your application will quickly look through it to see if there is any mistakes or if you have missed a part. However do not rely on them to spot your errors. Scan the application over and over and make sure everything is clear to read. Trust me, the less that someone has to do in regards to processing your form, the better. Add that together with being from a low-risk country (though you did not state your country) and that's about as much as you can speed things up.

After quick check: You seem to be right. The forms were different a few years ago, when I actually had to take part in filling them

The forms are actually very straightforward (at least in English) these days. I guess they either decided to remove some stuff that they didn't find as necessary to know (or that they could find out instantly through other means) to try and speed up the process of determining an outcome. But I guess that goes without saying.
