Public transport is cheap and very good here.

It doesn't state the prices on the website, but there not expensive.
The last time I bought a 5 day ticket it was 75 FIM, which is about
12 euros.

They have discontinued all the old tickets. <= thats a period

What you do is in the railway station you go to the compass downstairs. There are machines. You paick one and start pressing buttons. You can get 5 days universal pass... the only thing is zoning. if you are *in HELSINKI ONLY* you get a helsinki only ticket, if you have any implications of getting across the border to Espoo or Vantaa, you get a regional ticket. They do not refund stupidity.

And the ticket is a piece of paper looking like a regular one-fare bus ticket and the bus drivers will be staring and squinting at it and going 'wrong day' ...

Public transport quality/price ratio in Helsinki area is very good.
That is quality of service time keeping etc..
Quality of journey tends to be a bit diiferent late evenings when the drunks try to find their way home..but I noticed that when I came home on the M train around 11.30 PM last Saturday that there were bouncers/security men on the train..that is new!
Anyway one thing to bear in mind is that if you intend to use public transport daily buy a travel card.
If you dont speak Finnish take a Finn to help as Hank says there is no refund on mistakes at the ticket machine.
The Travel Card can be used on all buses, trams, local trains and underground in Helsinki, Espoo, Vantaa and Kauniainen as well as on the Suomenlinna ferry.

The user interface is somewhat confusing in any language.

I recommend a youth hostel instead of a hotel. Several members have already replied with youth hostel contact information. When I was a tourist years ago in Helsinki, my favorite was Hostel Academica. You can ask for a double room (which cost more), or a dormitory room which you will share with 1 or 2 roommates. But the nice thing is you get a kitchenette so you can prepare your own meals. Those rooms are basically vacant university student apartments rented out to tourists when classes are not in session.

There is one youth hostel in HKI which I definitely do NOT recommend, but darn it, I can´t remember the name nor the street where it´s located! If you are coming out of the railroad station, facing the direction of the main bus station, and go left, then take a right onto one of those side streets...it was up in there. It was organized in the same style as Erottajanpuisto, but definitely not the same (I've stayed at Erottajanpuisto and it was very nice). Anyway, this unpleasant place was located on an upper floor, dark and dingy, and my bunk bed reeked of cat urine. The shower had no place to hang towels and toilet barely enough room to turn around when the door was closed. Based on my clues, maybe someone can identify this hostel. Maybe it´s not even in business anymore.

You didn't stay at one of the bordellos by mistake? There is a few "hostels" that are notorious haunts of "business ladies". On the other hand theres small hostels in the area that are neat, the one in the national theatre for example.

Best priced transportation in Helsinki

Don't forget the Helsinki card and the Tourist card.

Can't beat the price and with the helsinki card get discount admission to most the museums, galleries, etc. And includes the ferry ride to Suomenlinna.

Eurohostel

Linnankatu 9
Helsinki 00160
Finland
Property Type: Hostel

Standard Rates
These great rates can be booked online up to 365 days in advance.
Room rates from 21.00 to 74.8 EUR.

I can definitely recommend this one, but it gets fairly booked up over the summer months. I usually stay here when visiting Helsinki or for an overnight stop (from UK) when heading up to Lapland.
