So, you'd take the cat to your home country and then your parents would force you to give it away?

interleukin: Upphew already linked MESY's site. tyzhao is going to Mikkeli, not Helsinki.

I doubt they will do that if I already bought a cat. My mom loves cats as well but it's my dad who is having problem with pets, dogs in particular but I think he can live with a cat?

At least my dad would have, hypothetically, been more pissed off if I got a pet without asking him (and made him pay for transporting it back home?).

(In reality, he loves his cat, despite its tendency to scratch the hell out of everyone.)

Tyzhao, I may be rude, but where are you from?
We are getting very mixed up cultural signals here.
You might be in very big trouble

ok i think i'll have to explain something, and i'm commenting on this thread for the last time.

i said i will have to put the cat on the street if it is the last resort. it's a very bad idea, and i do not intend to do it. but still it is a possibility that might happen if i fail to find another owner for the cat. i did not know that in finland cats are not sold in pet shops, and i always believed i will be able to find someone who is willing to take it, if i will not be able to bring the cat back to my home country, since i'm not familiar with the procedures of transporting pets between continent. i but it is something that i would like to do if i managed to get a cat in finland, and i'm pretty sure my parents are ok with it, although at this point i cannot be 100% sure that i will be able to do it, which is why the reason i'm pointing out all the possibilities. if like some of you have mentioned, finding another owner is difficult in finland, then i would not have bought the cat in the first place, period.

street cats are being taken very good care of here, with food and shelter provided by caring people and i always fondle them if i bump into one. but i have come to realize that might not be the case for every country, and i will hate myself for being the person to put my cat on the street. so for those of you who are bashing me for trying to put the cat on the streets, it is not something i intend to do, and i apologize of pointing that out.

so please do not execute me behind the sauna room.

it's ok. it certainly shows how welcoming finnish people are.

and i don't think you can attribute that to cultural differences. i'm not saying putting the cat on the streets is right in my culture, in fact i doubt it will be in every culture. like i said, it was a dumb idea, and i regret saying it, not to mention i have no intention to actually do it.

and after all these, i think i will definitely drop the idea of buying a cat in finland. getting death threats over a cat. totally worth it!

Please, blame the internet people, not the Finnish people.

(Though I suspect that this is a part of onkko's plan to insult every foreigner in the world, one by one. Compare: the "punch the whole world in the face" episode of Pasila.)

I will punch everyone who plan what she plans and i dont regret. If i see her i would punch her literally withouth hesitation.
Animals have rights too and i wont accept or understand what she plans.

First, how do you know tyzhao is a he or she?

Second, so your way of protecting animal is by physically threatening people who think differently? And you actually believe that you are entitled to punching a man in the face just because he has thought of putting a cat on the streets? What are you? A judge or a policeman? Why don't you go punch the racists? The homosexuals? Because you do not care about racism or homosexuality? You are going to punish everyone for having the wrong thoughts? Good luck with that.

The man has apologized, and he did not put a cat on the streets. Your threat will not only help, but it potentially deters a person from enjoying an animal's company.

Finally, take note that you are speaking to a foreigner here. And do consider how your comments will reflect on the Finnish people.

In some cultures putting a cat out on the street might not a big deal. But with the Finnish winters it will be difficult to survive for a stray cat.
Suggesting it might provoke some strong reactions amongst the animal lovers and tree hugging people.

thanks for the information.

i lives in singapore, and as you know singapore is close to the equator, most cats have no problem dealing with the weather. there are a lot of street cats here, mostly wild cats that have grown large in numbers over the years.

i have a few of them living in my school campus, and there are students who feed them everyday. they live under a shelter, and i constantly see students playing with them. in fact i have a couple of friends who are cat lovers and they would notify me whenever they see them so i can go play with them. i'm certainly not one of those animal abusers, and in fact i believe i love cats more than most of you do. it's just that based on my observation i have foolishly assumed that putting a cat on the streets is ok - i wouldn't say it's the right thing to do, because morally you are still wrong for abandoning your pet. i have come to realize that my assumption is wrong, and it certainly does not apply to every country, especially there are differences in climate/people's perception towards wild animals etc.

so after all these debate, questioning and threat, i think i will drop the idea of having a cat. it will be nice if i can get a short term placement from those animal agencies and return it back when i leave, but i will certainly not buy a cat given the circumstances. like i said many times above, i am not an animal abuser and i certainly do not support animal abuse. in fact onkko is right for pointing out animal have rights too - i believe in that as well. i came in with a good intention, but maybe i did not make myself clear at times.

again, apologies for saying i'll put the cat on the streets. it's something i would never have done in real life, and i have no intention of doing that in the future.

I would guess that reaction is what you would get from most here. Well, perhaps not actual punching, but close. In comparison, suggesting you would euthanize the pet would probably not get much of a reaction. We grew up with "Älä ota kesäkissaa" (Don't take a summer cat) messages, and it really did its job. It used to be that people took a summer cat, and then left it to fend for itself as they headed back to the city. If the cat was lucky it perhaps found some barn to live in and some local people to feed it, but most ended up as popsicle-cat. But yes, there used to be feral cats out in the country when I was a kid... not that many, winter sure did take care of culling... but I don't think there are that many anymore. But what we have now is wild rabbits, offspring of pet rabbits that stupid "#!#!¤"# have put out on the street. Yeah, I'm fine with any idiot that abandons a pet out on the street getting a punch in the face.

And if it helps somebody to think twice about their plans to take an animal they cannot actually take care of? Good! That is what a responsible wanna-be animal owner should do!
