Which bank do you recommend the most?

Postby ljl16 » Mon May 14, 2012 11:50 pm

Hey guys,

I will start soon a Finnish bank account and I was wondering which one would be best. Therefore, I would like to read your advice on that matter. From past experiences to recent events that would lead to believe that the bank will go bankrupt or any other things that come to mind.

Cheers,

Whichever is accepted most places. Osuuspankki, Nordea and Sampo Pankki.

Nordea is probably the best for non-Finnish speakers. Though some would beg to differ. Really it depends entirely on what you want to do with your money.

If you want English online banking, then the three mentioned are those that you need to choose from. I'd pick the one that offers the services that you need with the lowest monthly cost.

Nordea seem to be the bank of choice among phishing attackers, so if you think you lack common online sense, then maybe you should choose one of the others.

Osuuspankki has no 'English Online Banking'

Don't know about Sampo Pankki. But I know Nordea does offer online banking in English.

"Convenient access to your accounts on the Internet
The easiest way to access your accounts is the text version of OP-Pohjola Group's Internet service. You can check the balance and transactions of your accounts, transfer money between accounts and pay invoices conveniently on the Internet.
The entire text version is available in English. It is accessible at pda.op.fi using any device with Internet connectivity."

I was reading through OP and Sampo Pankki websites to check if I can consult the monthly cost of maintaining the accounts to no avail.

Any info on that? (maybe in the Finnish version there is information on that)

Which means you should take Nordea - all the info you need is in English.

Unless you want to take out a loan... all of that section is only available in Finnish or Swedish

I have been with Nordea now for 3 years and I am completely happy with the service received... The online Messaging/mail services is very useful. And also you can ask them to call you in English. The times when I have spoken to them, they have made it very easy to understand and speak exceptionally good English. In fact far better English than most of the call centres I dealt with when I lived in England.

To get any real info you have to deal with your personal advisor anyway...

There are other banks except Nordea, and in Finland everyone speaks English. When trying to open a bank account with Nordea, went through a 3rd degree, too much for me, irrelevant questions so I walked out and chose another bank instead.
And the queues are enough to put one off.

That maybe so down south. But further north and out of the bigger cities finding people who speak english is much harder!

I can strongly recommend Nordea. I've moved twice with them and now over 10 years banking. I always shop around but always end up back with them. The online and offline service has been excellent.

With the banks, just like the telcos, always ask for deals - especially with the cross selling like insurance.

Applying for loan via netbanking is available in Finnish and Swedish but WHY not in English ? This is very weird and stupid netbanking service. every operations including investments are available in English and when you need to apply for loan the service is ONLY in Finnish and Swedish.

If you use credit card and fail to pay bill in time, then you are blacklisted for other credit facilities for 2 years, another stupid concept. If you have payed your bills regularly and your salary comes in the same account, still you will be blacklisted.

I don't know much in other banks about failed payments case, but as I heard Sampo are great with loan deals. may worth trying

Hi,
There was an in-depth article in Helsingin Sanomat last February about the banks in Finland. The article was for
the local people and was very much detailed with a table.
You may try to get a hard copy somewhere if you are interested.
Of course all depends on how you want to use your bank and its service.

HS - Hinta & Laatu - 15.2.2012 - 4222 merkkiä - 1. painos

HS-TESTI

Pienet pankit parhaita

Kuluttaja-sivu selvitti, missä pankissa säästäväinen palkansaaja saa parhaan tuoton euroilleen. Kahdeksan pankin kisassa pienet pärjäsivät suuria paremmin. POP Pankki ja Aktia jakoivat voiton. Helsingin OP Pankki ja Nordea jäivät jumboiksi.

Here's a couple of trivial news.
Moody's downgraded Nordea and Handelsbanken last week.
Sampo will change its name to Gdansk Bank in 2013.
According to Finnish media, quite many people are deserting Nordea because of its poor service.
