Whats sinful?

Postby Blatent2ndaccount » Wed May 23, 2012 9:59 pm

Social taboo's, whats the worst sin you can commit in this country?

In my daiy life I/we/you/us all see behaviour that pisses us off.

Driving using a mobile phone (seems to be part of your driving test here)
The general skill level of drivers here seems poor.
Speeding is ok.. esp when using a mobile phone when in control of a bus with your elbows.

Im UK.. and have a lifelong tendancy to smoke indoors... I know this is wrong but its a habit i cant break. Very sinfull...

Being on medication legal or illegal. I often hear "we fought the war without drugs.. we dont need them now"

Being rich and not paying enough taxes

Being famous and having a meagre income?

Being russian

Drinking at the workplace

Being on benefits?

Having a mistress?

I know its a ramble.. but what do Finns concider the BIGGEST sin of all?

Coming from a country where the use of mobile phone while driving is the norm, and as I hate it, I expected a different behavior here but I am truly disappointed.

A more accurate term to what you mentioned would be 'faux pas'. Sins are more serious and dangerous in nature. One faux pas would be talking out loud on your cellphone in a closed public space although that can be generalized to any country but in Finland its more frowned upon.

I've never heard that argument. And it's not even true. Finnish kaukopartiomiehet (troops working behind enemy lines) had doses of heroin, opium and methamphetamine in their first aid kits. At the end of the war most troops had meth, since the Germans dumped their pills here after they decreased their own usage.

The biggest "sin" is having sex with children. Or maybe killing someone. Try not to do either of those.

This has been pretty much banned in every other place than one's (non-rented) home, and while I have seen cops smoking while leaning on a no-smoking sign, it wasn't in this country.

Being on medication legal or illegal.

conviction on drug offences are fairly harsh compared to other crimes (many of them probably remarkably lenient using UK standards)

Being rich and not paying enough taxes

On related note I think there is at least something left of the old view that the ideal rich person does not show his wealth too conspicuously.

Drinking at the workplace

Attitudes towards that have become lot more negative in the past few decades. Still not worst possible thing in most professions.

Being on benefits?

Being on benefits and not being embarrassed about it (+ being of prime working age and healthy)? For a many that still would be something worthy of considerable contempt.

Having a mistress?

Maybe if your wife is pregnant...

Back in the "old days" living beyond your means was "sinful", as almost was living without means. Still up to the 70's paying in installments vs. paying cash up front had a different status. "Being debt-free" was a status you ate gruel for 10 years to pay off your mortgage... Well, all thats gone now just looking at the 90's generations. Even though going to the social office or bread queue is a stigmatic thing. Some old generation won't "live on charity".

As for faux pas... well, you know when you done one as everyones staring at you ;)

Stealing - My wife got her bike stolen 3 days ago. It was locked up with 2 locks. A typical back wheel one and a sorta cheap number lock around the front and back tyres. Woke up and walked outside to just a cut number lock and the bike gone. The bike was old and pretty rusty but it had just had its gears replaced...

So that's the second time now my wife has had her bike stolen. I'd say stealing is the most unforgivable sin.

Leading a person on - A friend of mine is in love with a girl, and she doesn't give a crap about him anymore. Rather than tell him she just leads him on and and has done so for months. He's still sorta stupidly thinking that there is a chance to be with her. It's not his fault he just came out of a 2 year relationship. But it's so cowardly and unfair that this girl won't just tell him that she isn't interested anymore and that she has just fallen out of love and is over the commitment.

That is the second most unforgivable sin I think. Because no matter how many times it happens to you, you can't 'learn' from those situations because you're attached.

Driving a loud annoying car/motorbike/scooter - I personally hate dickwads that deliberately fly through the streets in a low gear at 2am just to wake up the locals because they have a small dick mentality and they need to justify their waste of money. There is nothing more annoying and pathetic than idiots who think it's cool to drive loud vehicles around.

That is my third complaint. Because there really is nothing to be gained from doing such things and the 'thrill' if any is so short lived.

Being judgemental without knowing someone - I have a few friends and I'd really like to introduce them to other friends but both parties are just so judgemental. I really hate judgemental people and people who make judgements before they even meet another person. Everyone has the capacity to be fun and a nice person to be around. It's so destructive and negative to just start making stupid assumptions before you even get to know someone.

This is probably the last thing that just pops into my mind straight away. I just wish people could get along. Then everyone would meet some people that they really like and could probably trust. But people always limit themselves by their own stupid standards.
I̶f I can find any way to insult someone, believe me I will.

We have a simular idiot here with a souped up dragster that belches black smoke at 500 decibels as he burns up and down our road constantly.

Sinful is just not to be able to take care of yourself. Failure in anything you do. It is seen shameful.
Opinions on it are though changing, but slowly!Image

**Judging** from your previous posts, one would hope that you will also take a note or two yourself.
