Pori. Cycling, Footie and Beer

Post by Rafflesfreemantle » Wed Apr 04, 2012 6:22 pm

Hello All

Newbie, so forgive if any of the below is in this Forum somewhere.

Move to Pori this May 2012, would like any info on:

Cycling clubs, never joined one but like road biking and thought a good way to meet the locals or Brits.

Where to watch footie, pubs, bars, social clubs, I read on the net that there is an English club in Pori?

Squash, not played for a while.

Kayaking. Thought i would give it a go as it seems there is plenty of water in Finland.

Any other info on Pori and the surrounding areas would be a great help.

Cheers

Raffles

You don't state your age, or why you're here. If you're a young studenty type try http://www.monikulttuuripori.com/index.php if you're here for work, then in the autumn register for a Finnish course at http://www.otsola.net/?Otsola_in_English.

I don't think there are that many British people in Pori (there's only 3000 or so of us in the whole country), and in Pori I only know one couple (who've been here 30 odd years and run a company teaching english to Finns / translating). A couple of years ago I played footy against an english chap, never even got his name. And some 6 or 7 years back I was on a Finnish course with a couple of other English people, but that's it.

English club ... vaguely remember hearing that's an english society for anglophile Finns, dunno, never tried them.

There was an Irish pub, which seems to have disappeared last time I walked past. I'm not a drinker. I watch my footy on liveonlinefooty.com and CanalPlus at home, not very sociable but better than the local bars.

Kayaking - not a clue ... you might start by looking here http://www.satakunnankansansoutu.fi/

Cycling; there's a nice-ish cycling route out to Yyteri beach, it's about 20km in each direction ... an hour there in the summer, a couple of hours at the beach and an hour back. We try to do that a couple of times a year.

That should keep you busy.

Once you've been here for a while, if there's anything you miss, drop us a PM, I can probably tell you where to find it, or what's the local equivalent.
