boat hire

Postby rocketman » Tue Jul 03, 2012 1:48 pm

So the story goes... I would like to go fishing, not just pier or shore fishing but to rent a boat and spend tyhe day going round in circles in a lake or in the sea... Does anyone know where to rent just a small boat preferably with an outboard but rowing would be fine and not so expensive ... :D

Yes!

These guys rent out all different sizes, and some of the packages include fuel for the motor!

I am also very interested in doing this in general but I want to ask. Do you need some sort of a license to drive the boat? Or are there any sort of specific terms that you have to meet if you want to rent one? Or is it just the down payment and then away you go?

Never heard of a requirement (have used boats in Finland for 30+ years without one). And hope you don't mind my spelling correction :D

Don't drive too drunk.

Pretty much, yes. Deposit and payment (credit card works) and cast off the painter! :D

iirc there is a kind of licence but it depends on the size of the boot and the engine.

Several years ago I volunteered to pilot a boot (more a floating jetty) on the river. But I had to follow a 5 day course and pass a test.
Since 75% of the course was navigation on open water I didn't bother. I don't get lost on a 10 meter wide river.

Thanks Karhunkoski! I'll definitely be looking for something like this in Oulu now :)

Yeah, its like with a bicycle (mopeds if youre born before 1986) no licence needed, but you are supposed to know what the different markers and rules are etc. and then if you have "over length X" you start needing to have a "pilot license" (and always for commerical IIRC).

And if you're hiring a boat on sea, you are supposed to get a map with it and have some inkling of navigation. If the coast guard or water police have a "theme day" you might be in for a keelhauling otherwise. :)

I think renting a boat is an option if you live in areas with a tourist industry, but outside of that its not so easy. Feels like everyone here already has a boat. I never managed to rent one in Oulu.

There are some links here...

In helsinki....
