expiry of residence permit

Postby zita » Mon Jul 16, 2012 7:23 pm

Hi,

My residence permit will expire soon end of October and I'm leaving for home country next month for some time. Can I still renew it if I come back after the expiry date? Will it affect my kela benefits at the same time? Or what would be your advices? Thank you.

You should submit the application before you leave. You might get some grief making your way back, moreover, the gap in your RP will effectively make you a "tourist" so then you start from 0 again.

If you are a non EU citizen you can't enter Finland without a valid permit. You'll be deported.

Questions about kela are hard to answer, logically there should be a disruption if your permit expires before you have applied for a new one, but dunno how the handle these issues. Best is to play safe, apply for the new permit and then go. You can apply months before the expiration date.

The thing is I'm leaving in 3 weeks time and may be back only after the expiry date, I don't know if they can help speed up the process before I leave. But I will try to ask.

After the permit's expiry date, I think I can enter as a "tourist" visa-on-arrival for 90 days for Europe.

Well nothing stops you from submitting the application does it? They will want to see your passport, but the RP is a card these days.

Just out of curiosity how early can you apply for an extension of a residents permit?

Better to ask from the police office in question. We once applied some months in advance (as we had been adviced to do)

It is not a 'renewal' anymore if you let your permit expire before submitting the new application.

Sorry! Yes you can if you are from some specific countries.

About when you can apply and how long will it take, it all depends on many factors. your location, basis for permit etc. I once applied 5 months before expiry and got next one within a week. I also had kinda same situation as you and I explained to them about it and they were helpful.

The info I received from poliisi foreigners dept this week, was that the normal application time now is about 3-4 months, prior the RP expires.

I called Malmi poliisi yesterday, he told me it could take up to 3 months for renewal. So it's better you apply few months in advance.
