Even in Finland I have seen Taxis, Posti cars (while waiting for newspapers) and other vehicles running for 15-20 minutes or even more, many times purposelessly in summer as well. Mostly this law is not applied strictly in Finland.

I haven't seen huge numbers of cars running their engines like i have seen in Canada or as described in Russia. So most people follow the law in Finland and considering the roads are not packed with new looking cars but the age is quite old compared to the european average and lots of them are cheap makes(toyota, honda etc) then the cold does not seem to cause too much trouble otherwise the cars would have to be much newer or having to have their engines replaced every few years.

Taxis - are you sure they are running their engines to keep warm. My BMW at least lets you stop the car and so long as the engine is warm then the heater keeps running for about 20mins, using up the heat left in the engine to keep you warm while parked. This probably explains one reason why big german cars are popular with taxi drivers.

It is irrelevent information as OP is not going to drive in Finland or is not going to stay here as it appears from his message. He has visited Finland and has seen somerhing which he is interested in trying in his homeland.


I am sure about taxis and posti cars. And I have seen a huge number of both of them. So they clearly disregard this law. Common peopl have no need to break the law as they have mostly their cars connected with electricity and they don't need to beat cold by running their engines.

Go to a newspaper pickup point in a winter night, where there are people using posti cars (not own cars) and you will observe how those drivers disregard these laws. Same with taxis which need to wait in cold winter nights.

And actually also more importantly common people don't break the law because they have to pay for their fuel. For posti cars and Taxis, mostly, you are just a driver

It's probably a stupid question, but I am visiting northern Finland for the first time and I think I need to use the engine block heater, but I am not sure how to operate the plug.

Those "switches" are automatic fuses. Green would be my guess. Try it?

If there're two sockets, there will be two switches also. So, depending upon the side of the socket you use, its switch should be flipped into "i" (i = initiating) in order for it to work. O means off.


You can try with your phone charger. If it charges, you are on the right path.
