Sounds like you know the areas pretty well already. The UK national park has always been my favorite. It takes a day or two to get out of the touristy areas, if you go from Saariselkä or Kilopää, but once you get out near Sokosti things get pretty wildernessy. There's also lot more around Kilpisjärvi than just Halti. Get off the trail a bit, the area is massive, and there's no way you've seen more than a tiny part just hiking to the top of Halti and back. There's also good hiking on the Swedish side, but I've not done that myself.

I realise I'm too late, but yes, the hiking from Kilpisjärvi towards Sweden and Norway is very nice indeed. There are a lot of trails up here in Lapland, and lots of wilderness areas perfect for a three or four day trip. Take a look at my blog http://www.backpackingnorth.com I cover a lot of the trails in that.

mission creep... Does anyone know if bicycles are allowed on national park trails? I've looked at the rules and didn't see anything prohibiting them, only motorized vehicles. But I'd hate to break rules just because I don't know about them..... Thanks!

Only on some trails that are specially marked as allowed. Or at least the few I checked were like that.

Too bad most of the links here are already dead :/

I'm considering to come over and do some hiking.

Is it true that hiking in summer is no go? They say that Finnish country sides have more mosquitos than in the Amazon... 9kg of hyttysiä for each Finn in the country?

depends where you are hiking. most anywhere in the north during the summer is mosquito heavy. august i think is a great time to hike. tail end of summer and changing colors of fall depending on your timing. plenty of route info on the net. google hiking finland or hiking suomi and you should get ample info.
there are some short routes in the south i would recommend: repoveden kansallaispuisto i did last year in 2 nights though its more likely 3 nights depending on your tempo. in the north i personally recommend lemmenjoki and koi and the karhunkierros.

Kittos aamm,

more questions, in other European countries, hikers have to be careful of
- hunting seasons
- wild animals

how is the situation in Finland?

most anywhere you nothing to worry about but mosquitos. in the east there are some bears and wolves, but i dont think you need to worry about them. spains wolf population and density is far beyond finlands and i came from a place in california where bears where regular. here in finland big predators are so rare that people freak out when they see them and it all gets printed in the newspaper.
