Has anyone here moved from the West Coast of the US to Finland? If so, can you recommend any shipping companies? We'll need to ship clothes, some kitchen stuff, books, but no furniture or really big stuff. Not sure how large a shipping container we need, but I'd like to start contacting companies and getting some quotes.
Thanks,
Eric

Shipping companies.
Hello Eric,
I moved in September from Chicago to Helsinki. It's not the same place but I am pretty sure that most of them have a company in your city, just check.
I checked a lot of companies. The one that I used was Worldwidemoving.
The company is good and all my things arrived here safe. Other company that I liked a lot and receive good recomendations is Allied, but the first one was more cheap so I choose that one.
Here are some sites that you can look , is just some "tips" for moving.

Here are the links with some companies that I look when I was planing my moving.

Here is one estimate from my moving from one company.
We didn't ship furniture, car. Just books, clothes, lines, computers, and some kitchen stuff.
This price is included packind from origin and arrive at destination.Without insurance, and customs duties, taxes storages.
Based on survey: 150 cubic feet with estimated 1,470 pounds
$3,034.00.
The prices from the others companies was around this with variations around $ 500,00 more or less.
Well I hope this will help you, because I know how difficult and stressed is to moving.
Other thing you shoul look is to see if the company is associated with BBB. Normaly at this site the customer write about the companies telling about the services. ( http://www.bbb.org).
Check at Finnish consulate or embassies at your city, they should know some moving companies.
Good luck.
If you have more questions fell free to send me an e-mail.

I moved from San Diego to Helsinki and used a Freight Forwarder. Much cheaper then using a shipping company. Look at the link and call around http://www.forwarders.com/home/directories.html
Serving my 9th year of a life sentence with no chance of early parole
I moved from Boston last year. i also used a freight forwarder, and it was much cheaper. We paid on the order of $1500 to have our car shipped here (packed with household goods). They containerized our vehicle, so it was "safe"ly packed way en route. However, I wouldn't recomment the particular freight forwarder I used (Marlog Cargo), as they were terrible in keeping me up to date on the status of my shipment (and there was a strike in NJ/NY harbor which ended up delaying our shipment by over a month).
