Roller derby

Post by lupine » Mon Feb 24, 2014 4:56 pm

Hi all,

I play and follow roller derby quite a lot in .uk, and would want to keep that up in Finland. There appears to be women's teams in at least Helsinki, Tampere and Turku, and men's in the first two of those:

Very long shot - but does anyone know if there's anything for men around Turku? Or how the bouts / scene are generally?

Hi,

All the major cities in Finland have women's derby league. You can check the list of leagues at
http://www.rollerderbyfinland.com/suomalaiset-seurat/ (the page is only in Finnish, sorry).

The research you have done concerning men's derby in Finland yielded correct results: there are currently two active merby teams, one in Tampere and another one in Helsinki.

I am a male living in Turku and participate in women's team (Dirty River Roller Grrrls, http://turkurollerderby.com/drrg/eng/) trainings and scrimmages. We are in process of establishing a merby team, but currently we are still too few to form a roster or have trainings of our own. There's a freshmeat course starting on upcoming Sunday (March 2nd) organised by Dirty River Roller Grrrls and there we have some male recruits too. So currently, there isn't anything specifically for men, but still something.

Let me know if you want more information!

Hi there,

Thanks very much for the information :). If I end up in Turku, I'll definitely look out for your fledgling men's team, and come along to dirty river practices. I'll probably be stopping off for a week or three in May or June, maybe you'll have a bout scheduled :)
