Most common verb for training animals? Internet question

Post by cssc » Thu Jul 10, 2014 9:23 pm

I want to say that I am training my cat. I see that for horses 'koulutaa' or 'valmentaa' are used. What is the best finnish verb 'train' for training a cat?
Or does it not matter? Thanks.

Also, what ending do I use if I am buying something off the internet. I'm thinking -sta. Or -lta?

Hmm, maybe "Koulutan kissaani.", but I'd rather say "Opetan kissalleni temppuja." (I'm teaching my cat tricks.), "Opetan kissani sisäsiistiksi." (I'm housetraining my cat.), etc.

In an animal context, "valmentaa" would only be used for something clearly sports-related, like training a horse for a race.

"Ostin sen netistä." "Ostin sen Amazonista." "Ostin sen tästä verkkokaupasta." (from this online store) "Ostin sen tältä sivulta/sivustolta." (from this webpage/website)

A dog is "school-trained" (kouluttaa), a horse is "sports-trained" (valmentaa) but I think the cat "teached- trains" (opettaa)you ;)

Well, after about 8 training sessions, I've already got my cat to come when called, sit, beg, jump on & off things, load in a pet carrier, heel, & walk across a see-saw. So there. :ochesey:

It's easy with clicker training. And she has JUST the right personality for it.

They DO train cats for movies, you know!

Well, she's kinda small & is missing half an ear. And our training sessions are pretty short. I think if I wanted her to put on a show she'd say "eff you!" She IS a cat, after all.
