How long does it generally take for a native English speaker to become somewhat proficient in Finnish?

How are you planning to study it? Are you living in Finland or elsewhere, will you have time to take classes, will you be interacting with native speakers?

About as long as it would take for a Polish plumber in Lille to learn English proficiently.

Living in Sweden doesn't magically make you learn Finnish. You have to study the language. :lightbulb:

Perhaps just a coincidence, but it requires exactly the same number of days as the number of licks it takes to get to the center of a Tootsie Roll Pop. In other words, the world may never know just how long it takes to become proficient in Finnish.

Seriously, though, it could take you 12 months or 25 years. It all depends on your particular circumstances, the learning material you have available, and the effort you're willing to put into it.
