I Give Up

Post by Rekkari » Sat Dec 06, 2014 11:24 pm

I've had this FF2 textbook for the better part of 20 years now and, as a pastime when I'm bored, I've spent many fruitless hours on Bing maps (birdseye view) trying to locate the town depicted on the cover.

I give up.

Anyone recognize this place? The inside cover mentions Keuruu 1987 and the author's forward ends with Kauniainen 1986, but I'll be darned if I've been able to find anything in Bing or Google maps that matches.

Anyone?

Too bad the author died long time ago and the publishing department that published the book doesn't exist anymore.

Savonlinna! I always figured it was somewhere in the Lake District. Talk about not being able to see the forest for the trees - I probably went right by the place where the picture was taken on my way to Olavinlinna Castle!

It's interesting to see how the area has changed since the 80's. Unfortunately, Bing Maps is pretty useless in that part of Finland - no birdseye view and low to no resolution on satellite view. Is there a military base nearby?

Did you recognize it from the picture or what?

Thanks!

My girlfriend asked on a different forum for you. Some people who grew up there recognized it.

The user interface is a bit clunky, but Kansalaisen karttapaikka, an online map service by The National Land Survey of Finland, has aerial views of Savonlinna.

Karttapaikka isn't actively developed anymore, their staff directed me to http://www.paikkatietoikkuna.fi/web/fi/kartta
