Overlapping Cases
Overlapping Cases
In a sentence like "These wines come from many countries," which case governs "from many countries"?
Re: Overlapping Cases
Nämä viinit ovat peräisin monista [eri] maista.
However, since it's moni, there is the less common option of monesta maasta -- still the same case, but worth remembering.
But they could also be peräisin ulkomailta. (Unless you're saying peräisin ulkomaisista lähteistä...)
As with visits to different cities, the noun will factor into the choice of sisä- or ulkopaikaillissija. And ulkomaat is/are different from maat, dontcha know? (They speak different languages there.)
Was there something about the sentence that made you suspect a twist?

As he persisted, I was obliged to tootle him gently at first and then, seeing no improvement, to trumpet him vigorously with my horn.
Re: Overlapping Cases
Thank you for the explanation. As my knowledge of Finnish is quite rudimentary, I may suspect twists where there are none. In this example the "from" made me want to use the elative or ablative, but the "many" the partitive.

In that case "lähdeluettelo" would be a list of wells/fountains.Jukka Aho wrote:The famous fountains of wine!AldenG wrote:Nämä viinit ovat peräisin monista [eri] maista.
