Cultural Interview School Assignment

Post by ChirpyChild » Tue Mar 17, 2015 2:48 am

Hi. Found this forum a few weeks ago and thought it was really helpful. I'm a Freshman at a small science high school, and I have a Social Studies assignment where I have to have to interview someone (on here is good too) who's not related to me or is one of my classmates. I wonder if someone would be willing to volunteer, essentially there are ~20 questions I need answered. Needs to be sometime before this Saturday so I can get an essay done.

Thanks!

Go ahead, ask.
Every case is unique. You can't measure the result of your application based on arbitrary anecdotes online.

A bit demanding questions!
1. I'll skip this, I just can't summarize culture in one line.
2. Me, my parents, my partner and our children, our siblings.
3. The one who has achieved most
4. Achieving one's goals.
5. Yes.
6. Somewhat.
7. Dinner.
8. Yes, but not that often. Chicken... I 'd guess oriental style would be fitting blanket.
9. No.
10. No.
11. Aren't gender roles defined by society? As for applying them in family... not rigidly.
12. Not really. Maybe sometimes my old habit of cost/benefit consciousness rises its nasty head and that could be said to be specific to Finnish culture (be aware, that we Finns are minority in this forum).
13. Christmas.
14. Letting people have their private space and invading it.
15. That our school system could be applied globally and get results. Heck! Even us can't get results from it anymore.
16. As a Finn in Finland, no. Have I witnessed racism here? Yes.
17. Yes. Or at least as good as their predecessors had in given age.
18. Yes. But I can't see problem with that.

1. What is your definition of culture?
A collection defining characteristics that distinguishes a group of people and shared amongst themselves. This can be company culture, a culture specific to a group of friends, a nation-wide culture, ethnicity-specific culture, religion-influenced, etc.
2. How do you define family?
Parents, brothers/sisters, husband/wife, kids, grand kids.
3. Who holds the most status in your family and why?
Never really thought about it, but I guess that would be me. It's mainly because of achievements: education, career, stability of life, and hobby-related achievements.
4. How do you define success?
Having goals and achieving them.
5. Do you consider your parents to be successful?
Somewhat.
6. How important is education in your family?
Very
7. What is the most important meal of the day to you?
Dinner.
8. Do you eat foods native to your culture? If so, what examples can you give? If not, what what types of food do you normally eat?
Quite rarely. Food in my culture usually requires lengthy preparations. Usually, whatever cooks best with ingredients I have.. oriental, Mexican, American.
9. Did you ever live with your grandparents or extended family?
Briefly for a couple of years, but it was quite an unusual situation.
10. Do you actively participate in an organized religion?
Nope.
11. Are gender roles specifically defined in your family?
As an extension of ones defined by society, maybe. But the males in the family help with cleaning and doing the dishes, etc., and my mother had a regular job, if that's what you're asking.
12. Do you have any eating habits/rituals specific to your culture?
Nope.
13. What do you personally believe is the most important holiday in your culture?
To me, all are the same. Back home, End of Ramadan and Christmas.
14. What do you consider to be the most respectful and most disrespectful in your culture?
Being kind to the elders. Not offering help to those who need it when you can.
15. What do you think are some of the biggest misconceptions about your culture?
I don't know about my culture, maybe just about me: That I'm a "a freeloader who is here to steal their tax money", I guess. Yeah, that would be the biggest one, and it's usually from people who know nothing about me at all.
16. Have you ever experienced racism?
Yes, but the tough things are part of life, so it's fine.
17. Do you think younger people have a good grasp on culture?
In Finland, yeah. Back home, somewhat yes.
18. Have you ever felt excluded based on gender or culture?
Yes, but the tough things are part of life, so it's fine.
