Finnish saying/story

Post by annalisamp » Tue Feb 24, 2015 8:05 pm

When I was little, my grandma would recite various things to us in her mother tongue of Finnish. She is now suffering from pretty bad dementia, and it is hard to get her to connect back to past memories. I would really love to recall one specific saying/story she would recite, and I need your help!

My best phonetic guess is that it started with "vinksi vonksi vinksi vonksi" ... and it had something to do with a dog going in and out of the woods.

Does anyone know what I am talking about? How it is spelled? What the words mean? I really appreciate your help!

Is it this...

Jompsis kompsis, jompsis kompsis,
koira metsään meni.
Susi tuli vastaan!
Sipusapu, sipusapu,
koira kotiin juoksi

?

...and I guess a rough translation would be (taking some poetic liberties):

Trudge, tramp, trudge, tramp,
The dog went into the forest,
A wolf appeared!
Tip-tap, tip-tap, tip-tap, tip-tap,
The dog came running home.

I think that might be it! Thank you so much! I also discovered I was looking for the words "vinksin vonksin"

Pippi Långstrump song comes to my mind, though I'm not sure how old that song is.

Code: Select all

 Kaikki on vinksin vonksin
 tai ainakin heikun keikun
 arvaas oikun eikun
 kuka oon joko arvaat sen
 Ullan nimi on Ulla
 nimi toinen vain on mulla
 jos et millään arvaa
 sanon suoraan sulle sen

etc.
Complete lyrics here under "Peppi Pitkätossu". "Suojelusenkeli" is another classic, and "Tuu tuu tupakkirulla" is an old one. Lyrics for those can be found on the same page (and many more).
"Elämme kovia aikoja, ystävä hyvä."

I googled with the words 'vinksin vonksin koira metsään meni', and found the following:

Koira meni metsään
jalat meni vinksin vonksin vinksin vonksin,
koira tuli metsästä
jalat meni sipi sapi sipi sapi

Apparently there are several different version of this dog-tale.
