I am not sure category to post, but hope for assistance.
My great grandfather migrated from Finland to the United States during the 1880s with the name Gabriel Bjorklund, but during migration changed his last name to Silfvast. As has been told to me is a region in finland.
However, I can find citizens in Finland with the last name Silfvast, but cannot locate the region.
Where is the Silfvast region?
Any assistance appreciated
Silfvast region
Re: Silfvast region
i tried with all search engines, but can't find silfvast as a region anywhere.
there's however quite a few finnish people with silfvast as a last name.
so, could it be that either
- the spelling is different
- there is a region in finland with an exceptionally large amount of "silfvast"-named people?

Re: Silfvast region
I'd go with the assumption that the spelling may be different, too. Especially comparing data from late 1800s and today.
There is, for example, an area called Silvasti in Mikkeli. So, silvasti may be one of the spellings that first come to mind.
Some names get a Finnishized version sometimes, as time goes by.
I hope you get more information about your great-grandfather and his origins and travels somewhere - certainly sounds interesting. Maybe you'll be able to track down the general area where he would be from, and go from there? A lot of Finns were eager correspondents with the people/family still in the old home country those days. And many people are into finding their roots and doing a mapping of their family tree here in Finland, so perhaps you get lucky and find a website or archives of that family name.
Good luck!

Re: Silfvast region
There is also Silvast in Uusikaarelpyy (Nykarleby in Swedish)
Name Björklund is common in the region nowadays (though in the 1880's Swedish last names were far more common than they are now throughout the country) http://www.tuomas.salste.net/suku/nimi/bjorklund.html
