A vibrant amateur drama scene in English in Helsinki

Post by llewellyn » Mon May 23, 2016 12:57 pm

A little known fact but there is actually a lively drama scene for English speaking theatre in Helsinki. There are several small amateur companies eager for new members in all sorts roles from acting to production and technical tasks. Below links to the three foremost among them:

https://www.rstc.fi/

You don't need to be a native speaker to join any of these - there are literally dozens of performances with very cheap ticket prices around the year, varying from full productions to play readings and various smaller performances.

I'm blowing my own horn as I've been involved for several years in the Finn-Brit Players and do recommend our brilliantly sour "dissatisfied expat clashing culturally in Finland" comedy, The Finnish Play - six performances in early June, do come!

Grand - see you! Yeah, really strong early sales for this one, the First Night was indeed sold out almost two weeks before the performance.

Thank you! It truly is such a funny play! It seems that pretty much everyone has liked it - next week's performances have still tickets left, heartily to be recommended!

Good timing, especially for those of us, Brits, who may be reflecting on our potential status as non-EU residents in an EU country in the not too distant future. Many of Gerald's remarks really resonate this week in the context of the Big Debate on EU membership that is taking place in the UK. I watched Cameron's (disastrous) performance on Sky last night and I started to feel more and more uneasy.

Is it Eileen who says (to Gerald): "You can't go back"? Even though I would like to think I don't have Gerald's "issues", I think we can all identify with the dilemma of not really belonging here or there... especially when  we are not so fluent in the local lingo.

Anyway, it was funny, relevant and slightly disconcerting! And 'merde' for the rest of the run.

Yeah, I like the edginess too, it's a funny play but not irrelevant or unchallenging at all. It's a strange thing, this referendum - such a fundamental question to be decided in quite a hurry... And it seems that it could easily go for the exit, and that would be a gigantic thing, both for the UK and Europe.

Check out our fall production, Melancholy Play, a great modern tragi-comedy!
