Fishing related information needed

Post by Arif Shah » Sun May 13, 2012 8:29 pm

Hi All,

I want to go to some fishing sites for fishing. I am new to fishing so I need a couple of information before I start

1) I have bought the small rod for fishing. Do I need the license for the small rod too. In some countries, you dont need the license for the small kind of fishing rods. I wonder if Finland has the same policy

2) What is the cost of getting a fishing license? How do I apply for it

3) Can you tell me some fishing spots near Tapiola Espoo. I need to know some public places and not private owned fishing spots

I appreciate your help in this regard

Arif

The fee must be paid by anyone aged 18-64 fishing in Finland – unless you are only ice fishing, or fishing with a simple rod and line (without a reel and lure).

Espoo page about fishing http://espoo.fi/en-US/Culture_and_sport ... on/Fishing so i think you should visit http://espoo.fi/en-US/City_of_Espoo/Con ... t_services to get exact areas where you can fish etc.

Thanks for the info everyone. I bought the licenses and have the necessary equipments and a map which shows where I can fish. I am all set to start, but I am totally new to fishing. I will appreciate if you could provide a few tips like

1) is this a good season to start fishing?
2) How should I chose the fishing location to get a good catch. I am thinking about fishing in the place near NokiaHouse building (The place between ruohlahti and westendasema), Should i throw my hook in deep water?

I have read some basic fishing tips, but still I think you might provide some practical tips. I apologize if my questions sound stupid, because I am totally a beginner and this is my first time trying fishing

Thanks
Arif

Once you have chosen your fishing area, try different bait, lures, depths, etc. These things can be very specific to the fishing place you're in. Also worth keeping a diary of where and with what, you caught fish.

Good Luck! Fishing is one of god's gifts and a wonderful pastime, whether you catch something or not :D

Keep an eye on what the locals are doing. Copy. If you're lucky you might find someone who's more than happy to give you some advice. But don't be surprised if some people accuse you of poaching. Just tell them you have the licence and ask them if they'd like to give you some hints :D

Cool, wet weather usually yields better results than warm, sunny weather. If you are fishing for food, then I would suggest perch and herring are better than pike.

If you catch a pike, throw it back especially if it's quite big. The smaller ones are OK but I wouldn't bother with anything over 3kg.

Excellent advice! But not all kinds of fish are available everywhere, and so you need to learn what kinds of fish could be found where you are going to fish, and how to catch them.

In lakes, the two most common fish are perch and pike, both are quite good to eat, but both call for different techniques of fishing. If you have a boat then you could go anywhere, into shallow waters and into deeper waters, but if you have no boat then learn how to fish the shallow waters from shore. Both perch and pike fish can be found in shallow waters.

In rivers, the best of fish can be found either by lure fishing or by fly fishing, either by boat or from shore, but you must experiment and learn as to find what works best.

A lot of city fishermen fish off the bridges, eg off the Lauttasaari bridge. I've noticed them when I go past in the bus. I guess the water underneath is quite deep and there are faster currents. There are dozens of bridges like that throughout the city but I'm not sure which ones allow fishing (I don't think you can fish from the Länsiväylä bridges for example). Also, from a rocky shoreline you might have deeper fishing than from, say, a sandy beach. So you can still have your feet on dry land and fish in deeper waters.

It appears that you are planning to fish in the salt water (ocean fishing) near the Länsiväylä bridge. Salt water fishing is very different from fresh water fishing (different baits, lures, etc.). It's probably better fishing at the end of a pier if you can get on one. Good luck!

Thank you all for the useful information. It was my first day and we went fully prepared. My wife was expecting to have a lot of fishes, and was seeing a lot of fish recipes on youtube. We went to Länsiväylä bridge with a lot of hopes. However, to my wife's disappointment, I broke the rod after a couple of tries. There were a lot of rocks under the water and the hook kept sticking with them. Thus we returned empty handed lol. There was another dude, who caught a lot of fishes though :D

I am in no mode to backtrack and and am planning to have another attack with more preparations. I am planning to order another rod and reel from ebay. Therefore, I will need a bit more of your time. I need some more info like

1) What are the popular brands of rod and reel that I should order.
2) Can you please tell me some locations of fresh water fishing spots. I have aready seen some dudes fishing near Länsiväylä bridge, but I also want to know some fresh water fishing spots. I have the map but I cant locate the fresh water lakes.

Thanks
Arif

On the upper left corner of this map http://www.retkikartta.fi/retkikartta.php go to Karttatasot (map information), and then go to Metsästys ja kalastus (hunting and fishing).

That depends on how much you want to spend. I would recommend Abu Garcia or Daiwa reels and G Loomis or Sr Coix rods. On the low end scale I would say look at Shakespeare or Shimano. It is important that you match your rod and reel with the species of fish that you are targeting. I have rods I use for pike that would be very tough to feel a perch bite on. On the flip side if you are after good sized pike using an unltralight setup will be very challenging in the least.
If you are fishing for whatever will bite, then something in the middle that has good feel for nibbling smaller fish but at the same time could handle a pike.
**** that and **** you
