Moped laws

Post by JooEi » Fri Mar 24, 2017 11:43 pm

I'm just looking for some clarification on the moped laws here. I have a full UK driving license and want to buy a 50cc moped to do deliveries around Helsinki. From what I can gather I can ride a 50cc moped without needing any motorbike licenses which is pretty standard in most countries I guess. But I can't find any info about whether I would need to take a test to prove my competence? Or can I just buy a moped and ride it straight away (after getting all the insurances and stuff done of course)?
Also, I've seen mopeds riding along the sidewalks which looks hilarious to me, but I would be able to ride one on the road and not be confined to riding on cycle lanes where mopeds are permitted right?

Thanks in advance to anyone that can help.

Depends on your age:

A moped licence (AM120) is compulsory for anyone born in or after 1985. Anyone born before 1985 may drive a moped without a driving licence.

How to acquire it : see link

Sadly the (english) trafi page does not say if a license B is enough for driving a mopo, I have a full (Finnish) A license, so no mentioning of the mopo there.

Because your UK B license grants you to use a mopo in UK, it would be very strange that you cannot do that in Finland, in case you would be a UK tourist coming here on your mopo (yeah long trip) you would not be allowed to drive your own UK mopo...so I think it is pretty safe to say you can.

And yes you can drive on most roads with the mopo, even when there is a bike / pedestrian lane or road next to it, (just do not go to the highway  )

Thanks for the reply. My understanding is the same as yours. I do have the AM part shown on my driving license, however in the UK you still have to complete a test to show you're safe on a motorbike to be able to ride anything less than 125cc (anything over you need a proper motorbike license) despite having a full driving license as well. It does seem weird that I'd be allowed to just ride a small bike without proving I can do it safely, but if so I'm not complaining!

And yeah, I have no plans to take the moped on a motorway

It does, both: https://www.trafi.fi/en/road/i_have_a_driving_licence "All categories except T and LT include the right to drive vehicles in Category AM."

You are totally right, I viewed the page on a tablet that would not allow me to scroll down, I just checked on the laptop and you got to scroll down on the page to find it, thanks for pointing that out Upphew
