wife = part time work plus learning finnish plus A residence permit.
wife wants to do masters degree but will apply december 2017 and start 2018.
She wants to do some degree now that will give her a student status and fill in the time between now and september 2018.
Recommendations on a degree or schooling that makes her a student status.

Can pay for degree or freebie.

It's a bit late to get on a proper degree course now, the applications were back in January. Open university applications are still open, I think, but they do not give student status.

One suggestion is https://www.helbus.fi/ If I remember correctly the degree is in two parts: first an HND (UK diploma) in two years and then a final year (?) to get the Bachelors. It is not free but I assume it would give your wife student status. It is taught in English, so it wouldn't help her Finnish much. You should call them to ask if it is possible to enrol for one year. It may be possible to transfer credits earned there to a regular degree programme later (though not sure that is possible with a Masters).

There is a place in Raasepori called Larkkulla which offers one-year intensive language courses (eg in Finnish or English, Swedish) http://www.larkkulla.net/en/
Karjaa is within commuting distance from Helsinki but usually these are residential. These are not free but not expensive and you do get student status. I'm pretty sure there are similar places elsewhere.

No. If I remember correctly, they are funded by the Lutheran church. It is possible there are some in Helsinki but I just don't know about them. But I think there is one in Porvoo/Borgå.
