Re: Citizenship Application 2016/2017
I just received the decision on my application. My own time line:
August 1985 - August 1989: lived in Finland as the child of a diplomat (from age 14 - 18))
August 2014 - present: living and working in Finland as an Italian/EU citizen
Although I fulfill the language requirements, I do NOT fulfill the accumulated residence time requirement according to the Maahanmuuttovirasto. Apparently, residing in Finland as a diplomat involves a type of residence permit that is NOT considered belonging to the canonical residence permits.
Therefore, my application has been rejected.
This decision is what it is. But on many levels, I don't consider it fair and reasonable. If the letter of the law counts time spent in Finland from age 15, it should be more than obvious, both from the documents I provided, and from simple inductive reasoning, that
1) I was physically present here at that age,
2) At that age, I would not have had any control over the circumstances of my stay here, no matter what type of residence permit I/my family had had then.
Now, should I try appealing this decision...or do I just wait another year and try again? Is my line of reasoning above altogether flawed? Why start the accumulated residency clock at age 15 when it's obvious that in the overwhelming majority of cases, a non-Finnish 15-year-old wouldn't reside in Finland without their parents or guardians? That that same 15-year-old would have no influence over the choice of their parents' profession, and thus over the circumstances of residency?

The appeal has the potential of taking so long that you'd be eligible already, and becoming eligible (in addition to satisfying the other conditions) is an almost guaranteed positive decision, while the appeal is a gamble.italosuomalainen wrote:Now, should I try appealing this decision...or do I just wait another year and try again?
Every case is unique. You can't measure the result of your application based on arbitrary anecdotes online.

I suspect you're right. But before I assume anything: does anyone here have experience with how long appeals take?Beep_Boop wrote:The appeal has the potential of taking so long that you'd be eligible already, and becoming eligible (in addition to satisfying the other conditions) is an almost guaranteed positive decision, while the appeal is a gamble.italosuomalainen wrote:Now, should I try appealing this decision...or do I just wait another year and try again?

You may ask these people here. http://finnishimmigrationlaw.com/ They might even give you some hint if the case is strong or not.italosuomalainen wrote:I suspect you're right. Anyone facing problems with migri contact number 0295 419 600 and 0295 419 624.
They are always busy. It seems there is no staff for responding in summer vacations for those numbers?

Do you get an email from migri when your application goes to the second stage if no further documents or information is needed? Or just when they need something from you? I know you get notified when the descion is made, but I'm wondering about the previous stage.

In my case they didn't send me any messages when it went to the second stage. But when they need something they will send a message.

Re: Citizenship Application 2016/2017
Hello everyone,
Is it normal for citizenship application to take more than 13 months ? I applied on june 2016 but there is no decision yet. I came in as a student and started working after graduation. They asked for supplement information on april and i replied. I feel like an outlier and that sucks.

I would suggest tat you contact migri. They have a number dedicated to citizenship matters which I have posted earlier. Because your case has taken longer than their estimates, and I think they would provide further information if you call.
But, I don't think you are necessarily an outlier. Here, most people post their timelines when they get a decision, but there might be a lot of people, even on this forum, who are in the same situation that you do not hear about.

Mine took more than 13 months as well, applied in early February 2016 and got decision in end of March 2017. There was nothing special about my case. It just took a long freaking time.papi123nwa wrote:Hello everyone,
