The thing is, that in-person meeting with the police doesn't achieve much at all. All they do is check the information on the paperwork. It's not like the police have some sort of superpower, whereby they can look someone in the eye and immediately know that they wouldn't be a responsible gun owner.
Political correctness is the belief that it's possible to pick up a turd by the clean end.

Yes - I can imagine how superficial that could be. I really should have said more in the post - that there really should be some kind of real interview. It might be difficult to have trained personnel in all areas - but the possibility to get guns 'on line' - with even false IDs - is scary.

I see your point, and as a hunter and competitive shooter, I can give you my view, if you're interested.

The real interviews take place when people join shooting clubs (and to a lesser extent, hunting clubs). New shooters have to interract and integrate with others and they are closely watched by others in the group, and if anyone is deemed "a bit odd" or "unsafe", someone will say something, people will talk, and in the end the authorities will get to know (many police are also hobby shooters).

Because guns are potentially dangerous in the wrong hands, hobby shooters are very motivated to keep their eyes open, and many, like me, dread the day when someone goes on a shooting rampage, for it not only causes pain and misery, but it also gives more ammunition to the anti-shooting lobby. The EU Commission has recently had a jolly good go at destroying our sport with ill-conceived legislation proposals, based on lies, untruths, false statistics and flawed logic.

But back to the "interviewing": taking semi-auto pistols as an example (perhaps considered to be more dangerous than a hunting rifle because of its higher magazine capacity and ability to easily hide in a deep pocket), the applicant needs to first take a theory course, written exam and shooting test, and then prove 2 years active hobby shooting (e.g. regularly training logged in a shooting diary, participation in competitions, etc.), BEFORE the police will even consider them for a purchase permit. In reality, this means that an existing pistol club member has to meet you, deem that you are trustworthy and level headed enough, and then accompany you to the range multiple times during a 2 year period, so you can use train with their gun.

In my opinion, that sort of vetting procedure is far more valuable that 15 mins sitting in a policeman's office.

Finally, YLE (like most MSM) have an anti-gun agenda. Their opening line, "New gun laws will soon make it easier for people to obtain firearms permits in Finland.", is bound to make the uninformed joe public think that getting a gun will now be "easy" and that the police will now be handing out permits willy nilly. It won't.

The changes being made will cut down on administration and reduce the amount of times an applicant has to visit the police station. So instead of sitting in front of an administrator in the licencing office, whilst she taps your name, address, hunting club membership, etc., in to the computer, the applicant will be able to do that online at home.

For a typical first-time applicant, who has no criminal history, is a member of a moose hunting club and local shooting range, does not have any medical history of mental problems, and who wants a bolt-action rifle for next season, there is really little need to drag him through an expensive bureaucratic application procedure.
Political correctness is the belief that it's possible to pick up a turd by the clean end.

I haven't done the psychological test for gun permit, but I've heard it is the same army uses... which is imho a joke. "Do you love your father?" "Have you considered to become florist?" "Do you feel that you have a tight band on your head?"

Which was highlighted nicely by link below the yle's article about gun expert bemoaning Finnish gun problems... proper term would have been anti-gun expert.
