I've been married to a lovely Finn for over 10 years, we met while she was on holiday in London, I'm a UK citizen.
We married in Finland , but live in London, UK. We have very active careers so put off having children ( we were under 25 when we met) and now my lovely wife is pregnant.
She has kept her Finnish passport, votes for main election in Finland and of course spends much time in Finland for her family and friends, she has no interest whatsoever becoming a UK citizen .
Brexit has changed everything. We haven't decided if we will move or even where, but my question concerns our baby which is due in a few months.
As I kept my surname and my wife kept her Finnish surname , she has told me we have to decide whose surname we want to give the baby, as Finnish law states we can't give her a double surname.
We would like the baby to have dual nationality, thus my wife intends to have the baby here in the UK but register her in Finland .
Does anyone know if this rule is still in place ( babies can only have one surname ??)
Odd Question
Re: Odd Question
The law is still the same. New one will allow double surname but not until 1.1.2019 https://www.eduskunta.fi/FI/tietoaedusk ... minen.aspxMartii100 wrote: ↑Wed Jun 20, 2018 10:03 pmI've been married to a lovely Finn for over 10 years, we met while she was on holiday in London, I'm a UK citizen.

Re: Odd Question
My partner and I are not married. I have dual citizenship. When my daughter was born she took a double surname, then I registered her without difficulty as a finnish citizen.
I didn't know about this law, but in our case it doesn't seem to have been a problem. I am guessing because her birth was registered in uk. That said, I think single surnames are more sensible and in my case, we had no option as neither would back down as to which name she would take!!
